Pillion peg fracture and rear protection..

    Hi Folks,

    I have a 2002 1000V2

I recently took a slow speed tumble on some frozen mud as I passed a farm at night..

The good news is my trusty crash bars took most of the force.. as usual..

however when i checked the bike at home, I found the right hand pillion peg had taken a knock, and in fact the upper mounting knuckle has fractured right through where it joins the large aluminium piece, leaving the peg useless..

I have found an alu welder and am hopeful I can get this properly fixed, but I'm worried it could easily happen again..

Has anyone else had a peg mount fracture like this, and is it possible to fit a rear crash bung or something so that the pillion peg doesn't take the weight of a drop on the rear half of the bike.. If so, where should it be mounted??

    Thanks for your advice/tips,

    Graham

    seconded.

Bent the SW Motech's a couple of times (standstill) and they did the job and bent back without too much grief, that's why I leave them on now, that and I'm too piggin lazy to take them off.

    Hi,

My friend dropped his during a slow speed/response traning section.

The GIVI bars saved a lot of damage but the footpeg hanger plate was a bit push in.

He ordered a new hanger plate (cost ...oh dear!) before local honda technician told us, only the mouting bracket on the exhaust was bent (oh oh dear dear!), sorted after a few hammer bangs.

So I believe there is a spare RH hanger plate either in mine or at his. If you need let me know, I will ask him about this in the meantime.

Thanks for this Lun - will let you know after the welder has had chance to inspect and say if he feels he can do a sound job..

Pannier racks sound a good idea, but unless I'm touring, I did wonder about something more discrete.. the Vara doesn't ALWAYS have to look like an overland Defender!

Anyone out there fitted rear bungs? (to a Vara or indeed any bike!)

    Cheers,

    Graham

I'm not sure that rear bungs are a good idea, unlike pannier frames they wouldn't have any give. Transferring impact forces directly to the back of the frame is much more likely to bend it.
Pannier frames have a certain amount of spring to them and even when bent are easy to straighten.

Hmm, good thought - although I don't think the pillionpeg itself has much give... the pillion peg, rider peg and footbrake are all attached to the hanger plate - the main bolt of which I think goes right through the swing arm to the other side - i don't have a diagram yet..

Thanks for the caution - keep you posted!
