Every manufacturer of after market cans will at some point claim that THEIR product will do this or will do that. If your exhaust is an original, it is now 9 years old bearing in mind date of manufacture. 9 years of carbon deposits and the like will have built up in the internals of the system and for use of a better word start to choke the living daylights out of the system. Much like an air filter is change every x amount of miles because it is clogged, the exhaust is always over looked. It is just as important to have an exhaust that allows the engine to get rid of the gases as it is important to have a clear air filter to allow a free flow of air in. I'm very apprehensive about changing my cans/whole system for a hand built stainless steel one as I can not be certain that it won't affect the mapping of the engine. It is a case of buyer beware I know but until I can find out for certain my money is staying were it is. I'd love a set of pipes to compliment the bike as the standard ones do absolutely nothing for the bike.
    Those are my thoughts

The choking up and 9 years old are some of the reasons i,m thinking of new cans even though she,s only got 36k km on the clock but hope to put loads more on this year round Europe. Can anyone give feed back on which cans are the best.

    Re: Clay technician

I have Ally Remus cans on my 00 dero,

First of all and most important to me, they sound wicked, burbulling nicely on throttle shut down and cars here me coming, people turn around in the street,(prob disappointed to see my dero rather than a crutch rocket!)My mate has a VTR Firestorm(same V-Twin) with blue flame cans on too, so theres no missing us two passing!
Secondly the bloke i bought it from looked after it very well( Full Service book and shed loads of paperwork) and he did say he had it Dynoed after fitting the cans and claimed it puts out 96bhp at the rear wheel? Now im no expert but i think these claim to have 96bhp at the crank standard? So it must of gained from these cans, but by my calculations about 10/15 bhp?!
Thirdly fuel consumption, i didnt go out looking for a dero, i wanted a transalp or similar, but after a test on one(2008 model) i couldnt wait to get off it, i used to have a 84 xl600 paris dakar and it rode nicer than the transalp! So someone told me to try a dero, so i did, but nearly didnt buy one cos every review you read about them knock the fuel economy, but i can honestly say i dont see a problem. The dero is a touring machine so you dont rag it around like a crutch rocket, on normal riding i put £15 a time in to which i get about 150mls. I also put £15 a time in my Yamaha Thundercat 600 Sports bike and i rag the sh*t out of it and get about 150mls, so wheres the problem? i mean you dont expect a BMW 535 to have the same mpg as a Saxo cos they both offer different things.
Sorry dont like people who test/review/report on bikes!

So to answer you Question not sure if they 'improve consumption' and not having the bike before they were fitted i cant give an accurate account, but mine seems normal.

If an exhaust is choked up with carbon there is something seriously wrong with the set up of the bike!

I don't wish to be picky here but the bike does have 36k km on the clock and the system is 9 years old and I did say " for use of a better word "

    Hi Phil,

Sorry but I have a totally different viewpoint.

The sound of a Vara on descent end cans is absolutely wonderful, but IMHO they don't need more power, a little less weight is probably a better benifit and the extra interest from the Police is questionable too. I also think because they sound so much better you tend to rev them more and the already dissapointing MPG's will suffer.
The fueling will need some attention too and you probably should look at the air filter too at the same time.

A pair of cans is gonna cost a few hundred quid. I decided to convert this into petrol and get out and ride. 400 quid is a good few miles/hotel nights/camping trips etc.

Its your bike and decision and this is just a different way of spending your hard earned cash.
    Enjoy,

    Pau
