Just bought my 2nd zumo 550 - sold first one a year or so ago and bought a little nuvi instead. I hard wrired my zumo to the tail light so it only came on with the ignition - worked fine for me!

On my Transalp I have the Sat Nav wired through the lights as they come on with the ignition.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

this is the way i hardwired my TOMTOM 510 in. I just wired in relay and used the power from the odometer to switch the relay coil making it igniton switched (99 Varadero)

The cable wrapped around the handlebar bridge then connects direct to the satnav. EASYPEASY

put a curly cable on mine and a hella size plug on the end, to go into the dash power socket wired into the heated grips, which i had previously wired into a switched lived power box under the seat.

I just hard wired mine direct to the battery, I've had no probs, I never leave it attached when i'm not with the bike so really don't see the need for a relay, it comes with an inline fuse and the power draw is minimal. Operational wise I think its great, when it gets dirty I just run it under a cold tap and gently wipe it with my fingers, so its definitly waterproof.

Same here. Hard wired to the battery. I have never had a problem with it being connected that way and as far as waterproof goes, it was baptised last year on a wet welsh ride out to devils bridge via the ellen valley and it survived which is more than could be said for me that day

+1 for the direct to battery option. Makes things very simple and limits messing around with the electrics to an absolute minimum.

I used a similar setup on my old GS with my current Zumo, a 2610 and 3x Quests. If I wasn't going to use a GPS for long periods then I'd just pull the fuse.

    Easy peasy

considering the mount alone is £80 i would never permanently wire it onto the bike, thats why i use the accessory plug. the RAM stuff is just too easy to take off.

+1 again for the direct connection. Also take it off every time, not had any battery issues as said current is very low, it's survived regular monsoon downpours and still operates fine in the wet, even the touch screen with wet gloves.

I am in the process of making a small simple dash bar to mount directly behind the screen to get rid of the RAM mount. Bars are getting too cluttered what with the Zumo, Tyre Pressure Readout and the ERP unit (automatic deduction from a cashcard for parking and road toll charges in Singapore).

Will post up some pics when I am done.
