Ive spotted a vara im thinking of buying , Its a 07 with no abs, for a few pound more im sure I could net a bike with abs, should I bother.
I would be inclined to ride more off road than most people.

Nah. If you could find a Vara with no DualBrakes you should buy that one.
The dual braking is not too hot for offroad but ABS would be worse, I know which I'd prefer!
No ABS for offoad bias.
I think all Vara's come with dual-brakes, but these can be by-passed with a small link pipe. The vara is the first bike I've had with dual-brakes, after the initial aprehensivness I'm actually quite liking them. Mind you, if I go off-road it because I've gone shooting through a hedge or something. As far as ABS goes, I can't imagine it would be any use whatsoever off-road. Honda should follow BMW's lead and give you the option of switching the ABS off
Just an after thought, but if the ABS has an independant fuse, that could be pulled for off-road riding and replaced for on road giving you the safety benefits on road.
Some mechanic that I know told me that he had disabled that brake systems in his XX Honda. He said that in simbly a matter on adjustment. Supposedly theres some screw there and by screwing it in it should disable the system. I´m eager to find out. Have to pop in to his shop to ask more spesific instructions.
I'd like to hear more on this as well, I'd like to be able to switch off both linked brakes and ABS for offroad use. If anyone's got any bright ideas let's hear them!
I´m sure theres more info but it´ll take some time. Have to get rid of the snow first and get the bike out of garage. No point of going there without it. If I get some more info, or should I say, when I get, I´ll let you know.
I'm of the thinking that Mr Honda put dual brakes on a varadero for a reason - I'm happy with that
As for ABS - I've never yet had the need for it but when the time comes I'm sure I'll be glad my varadero has ABS![]()
That's exactly my thoughts too and when I was out with my son on the back and some twonk in a white van pulled out in front of me on a damp road then stopped blocking the road I knew it was going to be a sore one. I was braking as hard as I dared then remembered I had ABS and jammed on the brakes as hard as I could and the bike stood on its nose and stopped with about 6-12 inches to spare. With years of sports bike riding I thought I was pretty good on the brakes but in the wet there was simply no way I would have stopped in time.
I would def have abs again if it at all possible.
As for disabling it. I've never tried but there are 2 30 amp fuses under the seat and I bet pulling either or both of these would do the trick.
There is a warning in the manual that running the bike in gear when on the centrestand so the rear wheel turns and the front doesen't will after 20 - 30 seconds cause the abs to error, stop working and the warning lamp on on the dash lights. The abs won't reenable itself until you switch off the ignition and switch back on again.
I'm on the Safe House List
