what are the symptoms when a new air filter is due?

The fuel consumption of my VA5 has gone up a bit plus engine sounds like it wants more air. The bike is just over 10k and last serviced 8 months ago. I believe the air filter has never been changed.

My primary worry is the increase in fuel use.

Does it feel like the choke is on, If thee filter is blocked it will struggle once it warms up, but while it is cold it fells normal.
The cost of a filter is not expensive compared to the damage caused when the engine is straining.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Changed the filter on my latest purchase yesterday - the one I removed was the original from '99 (bikes only done 11k miles) and there was no red visible - just black and loads of cr#p!

Cant say I noticed any difference in the way the machine drives with a new filter in - fuel consumption will improve a bit I hope!

    Just my tuppence worth.

PS - mined you dont accidently partially open a fuel tap when fiddling in that area - loads of fuel pours out, believe me
