Check your coolant level, if it is low the engine will seem lumpy, plus it ill not dissipate the internal heat so will seem cold but will do damage to the engine.

If you find a thermostat inside and it's stuck open, the solution is obvious. However if it's closed you need to test it by dangling it in a pot of boiling water.

Something I found confusing is that water begins to "boil" a little even when the mean water temperature is only 80 degrees or so! You should see the thermostat open at this point. If it opens in luke-warm water it needs to be replaced.

I've had the same problem since I first had my 99 Vara. Always thought that this was something I had to live with!
Where is the thermostat located? Is it easy to access?
    Cheers

I've had my 99 model over six years and it rarely goes abouve 1/4 up the guage. Twice i've seen in go 1/2 that was at 44degree'sC in Barcelona and the other was at 38degreesC sat in traffic for 3/4hr at the Plymouth Megaride. Don't forget gentlemen these thing have 2 radiators and the front cylinder also gets air cooled. So there's no fault with you bikes.

I wouldn't even bother checking the thermostat if i was going to remove it to test it then i would just chuck a new one in for peice of mind ain't worth the fuss or hasstle for a few quid

If the coolant is at the correct level and there is no air lock, then do not worry unless it runs hot.

Mine normally sits between the 1/4 and 1/2, even with two radiators and air cooling I still wouldn't expect it to be cold to touch, remember his bike is also running lumpy. I agree its not worth testing a thermostat, just stick another one in it and see if it improves things. I'm not sure where they are located, but they are usually on the side of the engine, where the top radiator hose joins the engine is normally where a thermostat can be found

    Re: engine runs cold??????

Hondas from old used to have weak sensors and/or wrongly calibrated temperature gauges. But if it is genuinely running too cool this could increase fuel consumption and engine wear, and reduce performance.
