yeah, i never understood it, mobil1 racing oil didnt match the recomended SAE in the handbook anyway, so whats that all about?
i used the castrol (GPS i think?) because the dealer said thats what they put in there when they do services, so i carried on using it. i never had any trouble with it before the meltdown, but it did use a little between services.
thankfully honda dont seem to be so fussy, my dealer (portsmouth motorcycles) change what brands on the shelves regularly, i guess whatever deals their suppliers are doing at the time.
for price, you have to go a long way to beat halfords own bought with a trade card though, ive just changed mine for a trip round southern spain in two weeks, if it doesnt work out the bike is due an 8K service when i get back anyway.

one thing to watch out for- do a bit of research online before buying because halfords oil is marked up to euro standards and isnt marked at all for the JASA standards.

Over the years i have all ways used castrol oil in my bikes,
I mostly use castrol gps semi synthetic and have never had a bike use oil between services, my vara came from the previous owner with fresh fully synthetic castrol in so i have just topped up with the same untill next service,
I have all ways used castrol oil in my cars ,my landrover & wifes micra both have magnatex oil in,
I think it stems back from when I was a boy and my dad all ways used GTX.

Top tip :............................. if you want to save half the money on your castrol magnatex oil buy the Valvoline durablend it is the same oil only half the price, and processed at the same refineries

Clutchspring mate, my Landrover burns oil so fast I use Asda's finest! Cheap as chips! As it's a bit thicker it runs out slower over my drive! But then, it is a 1961! She'll be 48 this August.

Enough about Landie's, my Vara doesn't leak oil or burn it as I've noticed but then I've only 2000 miles on it so far!

There are a few "branded" oils that go under "industrial" brand names, if you have a local oil distributor go and make friends with them, it can save you a fortune, especially if you run Landies!
