My 03 barely uses a drop over 5k klms between services, mixed highway and town riding, hot out here. Using Maxima 15-40 fully synthetic.

In my '99 Vara I've used Halfords fully synthetic for the last nine years. I only change the oil annually, but it doesn't need topped up at all in between changes.

    Why did you ask anyway?

    Re: oil consumtion

Im asking because my 04 vara has used 450ml of oil in 4000 miles,
Most of that miles has been fast european motorway miles, usualy around a 760 miles in one day,
I thought this a little high on a 20,000 vara,
Had a look at other web sites and it does seem common with certain oil,
Some owners have changed from castrol to other brands and this stoped the high oil consumtion,

I went with a friend to G T Motorcycles in Plymouth to have is GSX1400 dyno'd and the guys in the workshop up there were saying the Castrol causes oil to be burnt, lowers compression (Seems to be a big problem for them on the new Truimphs so he was saying as they run 5w15w he said it's like water even when it's cold) and causes them to smoke quite badly because it is too refined for the bike engines ( basically it far superior to what the bikes require or can cope with) , they said silkolene also has the same symptoms which i agree with as use in my bikes sometimes. They said the best oil on the market to buy is Rock Oil and when he mention that the penny dropped. My Xr has been smoking on start up since i have changed the oil to silkolene but it didn't when using Rock OIl's Guardian

few years ago my sprintST ate its bottom end at 8000mi, a month out of warranty! over £2K worth of parts triumph coughed up for with a guilty conscience but i still had a £700 labour bill. that was running on castrol, but recomended oil was mobil1 racing oil (at £12 a litre, f### that!) 10w50w so above might not be right?

thank god i swapped it for the varadero, with a big unfussy v-twin.

    Re: oil consumtion

I've found bikes running fully synthetic do often tend to burn a little, you can smell it when following them. The Triumph you can't really get away from that as fully synth's recommended.
The Vara doesn't rev to the extent of the multi cylinders and semi synth's recommended. I'm using Silkoline in the Vara, I've used Rock oil in other twins for 100's of thousands of miles and no problems. The Tiger got either Motul or Silkoline.

G T MOtorcycles are a Triumph main dealer, I can't see them purposly putting the wrong oil in the bikes before selling them, they would have no end of warranty claims to pay out on.
