Re: Which is the best Varadero ?

    Hi,
I also had a 2004 TA which was great and I really enjoyed it, but have to agree with it being breathless 2 up. Through town and any road but motorways was fine. The fuel economy was worse than a 2005 (ABS) varadero, on long runs as I was always having to put more fuel in the vara.
Now have a 2007 Varadero and would not go back, the wife loves the extra room and the improved seat comfort.
The 2007 vara appears to have better fuel economy than the 2005 (Sorry BORIS) as it will take less fuel at fill ups on runs.

So the upshot is what do you want the bike for?

MIne's 99 model orange and carbed can't fault it fueling is bang on all day comfortable effortless to ride long distances. New ones have a seat the same shape and hardness as my XR400 so wouldn't like to go to far on that and the new ones are built in the Spanish factory not the Japanesse factory so expect paint to be thinner, the finish not to be quite so good and generally not put together quite so well.

I have a 99' carbadero, I've travelled round Europe on it and it performed really well. Fuel consumption can be really good or really bad, e.g. with panniers on sitting at 90 instead of 70 you can expect to do about 50mls less per tank, while sitting at 60 - 70 it will do well over 200mls per tank. Handling is decent but it doesn't handle like a sports bike (like some have claimed), power delivery is almost perfect for road riding, with loads of grunt and mid range, although I would like a bit more at the top of the rev range. Comfort is a bit of a grey area for me, it is very roomy, with excellent wind and weather protection (I have an On Two Wheels flip up screen fitted) but the seat is not the best, it leaves me with a numb bum after about 30mins of riding. In saying that it doesn't stop me from putting in big miles. Looks wise, they're not bonny, not as ugly as a GS, but even Quasi Mo-do wasn't that ugly, I think Vara's are a case of function over style. On the whole, I think the vast majority of owners are well chuffed with their Vara's, which says it all. I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you were to get one

Snap! Mine's a '99 orange carby, but I thought it was built in Italy...?

Or has old age fuddled my brain. No don't answer.

Get some stiffer hagon springs Frad and a better rear shock may make the TA handle better. 80 mph is more than enough I still only found myself doing that on the GSA
