    Re: Fi problem

I'm following this one with great interest folks, I'm heading to the Stella Alpina rally in Italy from Scotland next month and would be rather upset if I had a problem getting the bike to start!
I believe it would result in a small electrical fire, which would be terminal!
Any word on a possible recall by Honda?

    Why do you say that?

I had this issue but intermitently. Then I got two new keys registered to the HISS module (I only got one key with the bike and the limit is 4). Since then the problem has not recurred.

Mine is an 03 injection so not a new bike.

    Re: Fi problem

hmmm, I wonder if the 3 minor and 1 less minor problems I have with my Vara are linked and have a similar root cause:
    1. The less minor problem - charging - see another recent thread on this, basically the battery is only getting charged at about 12.2volts and not 13.6 (or whatever) it should be. Honda now about to replace the Stator Generator after experimenting with reg/rec and battery- which have already been replaced once about 1 year ago.

    2. Minor problem.... every now and then the engine turns but won't start. Only happens when warm that's about the only pattern so far. Flick the kill switch off/on and it starts straight away. I thought it will turn out to be the kill switch contacts but it might not be. It could be a HISS problem or an ignition switch problem that flicking the kill switch cures in another way (don't ask what, I dunno)

    3. Again intermittently, on startup I get spit backs into the air box mostly several small pops but can be 1 or 2 bigger one's. I put this down to the K&N and/or variances in atmospherics and humidity on the day.

    4. This has only happened about 3 times. Similar to above but a huge loud spit back in the air box and a stalled engine. Always happens after running on a closed throttle for a few seconds, eg approaching a junction, and spits back just as I open up. Nearly dropped her once.

I confess to not really understanding FI and modern engine management but all this sounds like it could be related to one or more of the management devices failing in some way or perhaps they will all be cured when I get the charging system fully sorted.

Freerangestormer, you've been away too long mate , if my Honda breaks down in the middle of the Stella, miles from the main road, I'll roll it to the nearest tar, a small electrical fault will then become a large fire! Two tickets on the first flight back to the UK and a new bike will follow as soon as the insurance clears .

    Re: Fi problem

My XL1000V8 is in the dealer today to replace the ECU and ignition lock, together with other locks so that they still match. This is what Honda have suggested to the dealer. They say it can not possibly be the HISS antenae, which seems odd, but clearly need to go with them. Will post when I have done a few miles and report hopefully that the FI problem has gone away.

    Re: Fi problem

Big ride yesterday after new ECU and ingition switch fitted Friday. Unfortunately the problem remains. The old HISS and FI light stayed on, bike turns over but does not start. Happens on re start with semi warm or warm engine, never from cold start. Went back to dealer later on and we are going to fit a new fuel cut off relay. Not sure this is the answer, as I have already pulled the front upper fairing off myself and swapped this relay with the high beam headlight relay. Sounds odd I know, but there are 5 relays all with exactly the same part number in a line, so good for swapping for fault elimination process. Not sure where this is going, but will perservere. Problem is not critical, I have wotrked out how to overcome issue to start the bike. We will see. I have phoned Honda, and do not like to rude, but sounded like first day at the call centre, could not really even understand what I was explaining. Not technical at all, but friendly enough. Pleased to here of any other experiences.

Have any of the Dealers Checked the Earth points?
I had a similar problem on a Cage and it turned out to be one of the earth leads was not secured to the Engine properly, this was causing the ignition and charging to become problematic.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
