    Fi problem

Hi, when i try to start my 2005 fuel injected dero, sometimes the fi light will not go off and the bike wont start, does anyone know if this is a fault on this model/year, if i try to start it and then take the key out and try again you hear the pump whirr in to life and the light goes off and the bike starts first time ?
    any ideas ?
    thanks

My only idea is the one you dont want to hear

    Fuelpump

when I switch on you hear the pump whirring into life if you hear nothing that is not a good sign

    Re: Fi problem

I have exactly the same problem with my 3000 mile, 09 reg. It has happened to me 5 times over the last month, including today when I was out for a ride (managed 345miles today - Chepstow up as far as Harlech Castle).

The bike is going into the dealers on Saturday to be plugged into the computer. Hopefully the fault code will show the problem.

Will let you know what they find.

    hi
when i first got my baby f1 light came on as well. after listening to several "experts" and trawling the internet for fault codes which are indicated by a number of short and long flashes when you fisrt switch on, i found the cause should have been number2 co2 sensor. as it was still under waranty it went off to the dealer for repair. it was a regulator fault. i wasted hours trawling the net and got nowhere. unfortunately dealers seem to have the upper hand with diagnostics.
    regards alan

Update: Have just got back from 2 hours at the dealers. They believe its a fault with the "immobiliser aerial" (the black bit with H.I.S.S. on it that surrounds the ignition). There were no fault codes stored in the ecu. The dealer has ordered a new aerial from Honda.

They managed to get the fault to show up once today after turning the ignition on and off for quite some time. I can use the bike until the new part arrives but if the fault shows again the mechanic has asked that I note whether the H.I.S.S. light stays on as well as the FI light.

They replicated an "aerial" failure using their computer which resulted in the same symptoms ie fuel pump not whirring, FI and H.I.S.S. lights staying on - the engine will then crank on the button but will not fire/start.

Another possibility is a fault with the transponder in the ignition key. If it happens again over the next few days they've also asked me to try using my spare key.

Will update when the new part is fitted.

ps did I read somewhere that BMW had a problem with the "immobiliser aerials" on some of their bike range?

    Re: Fi problem

My 03 did this a few times when I got the bike, I went to the extent of getting a spare non HISS key cut, out of warranty and the dealer was unhelpful / uninterested.

I found it would start with the bare key holding the HISS key nearby, some further away positions worked better than holding the key closer guess that's due to the antenna reception footprint. I also stopped using the kill switch which helped, then I got a specialist ADV type mechanic to get me two spare HISS keys (I didn't get a spare with the bike) and get the receiver reprogramed to accept the new keys. Haven't had any trouble at all since then and I am using the original key still.

There is a posibiliy that refeshing the HISS memory has helped, to an engineer that sounds a bit folklore electronic vodoo but I have had experience "refreshing" stuff before that worked when my engineers brain didn't have a clue why.

That'll be because the zeroes and ones are more strongly zeroes and ones.

That is so true. Very similiar to getting an old telly to work by giving it a good bang to get the electrons going in the right direction I guess?
