The original idea was to have a post retirement sauree and take six weeks to do Alaska and the Dempster/Dalton highways on the Varadero but alas the offer of a new job has curtailed that for another time.
Sooooooo I have permission from SWMBO to take a month and travel around Canada and the USA. Although there are no definative plans as to where I'll go (that's half the fun) the map shows a few places I would like to visit given the time and weather. Unlike my trip in '06 I'll have loads more time to chill and see the sights. Unfortunately I shall miss this year's TLD but my sponsrship is already in the TLD online tin!
As you all know Canada is vast and I doubt that I'll get to visit half of the tagged areas but I am taking it easy and just travelling as and where the road takes me.
The bike went to Liverpool today and should arrive in Port Newark New Jersey on June 23rd. I fly out the same day. If I can through the necessary customs procedures the next day I'm heading north via Connecticut, then through the Arondirack national park toward New Brunswick.
The intention is to stay 3-4 days in the area and take in some of the tagged sights and Nova Scotia. From there it really is a multiple choice map. Prince Edward Island is a must however if I can get a ferry I may go over to Newfoundland and spend another few days exploring.
Then its back to the mainland and into Quebec and possibly the Whale Coast as far as the route will take me. After that its into the heartland of Quebec and Ontario where I'll probably get lost...or eaten (the wife is banking on option no:2). I'll be doing the usual, if brief, touristy stuff and visiting Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. I'm sh*t scared of heights but I am going to force myself onto the glass floor of the CN Tower so I can mark it off the bucket list!
I was taking a ride along the James Bay Road to Rupert River Falls however it is a fairly desolate road with little traffic or services and my mechanical knowledge being what it is will probably force me to bottle that one. A ride along the North Shore of Lake Superior will have to suffice.
I was attemting to do all the Great Lakes on this trip however I'm changing plans and heading down to the Carolinas to meet up with my buddies from the old zx12.org site and spend a few days riding the Smokeys, the Cherohala Skyway and maybe even Deals Gap if there's time.
Then its back north through D.C. (of which I have less than fond memories) and NYC to arrange the trip home.
I'll do my best to put up some pics daily on this site and I will probably reactivate my original blog at www.blog-adventure-usa.blogspot.com where there'll be more pics and guff....
Finally good luck to you all on the TLD.....
