Maybe the rectifier/regulator at fault?
When mine packed in it didn't half warm up the battery!
The fact the bike had run that day the battery should have had enough power to start the bike. With the charge from running the bike and the fact it wasn't cold I'm more inclined to believe the problem is reg/rectifier.
A new battery will only last for a few days, maybe weeks. Simple test though, voltmeter, remove seat, check voltage before starting. Start the bike and check voltage again, if increases from 12v to 14 or 15v then ok. Too high is bad and will cook the battery, hence it's dry!
Let us know how you get on mate.
