Re: Piggin battery

I have heard tell that the gell batteries are a waste of money.
The best type are the old style Lead / Acid batteries.
They may have improved in recent times but I would stick with the devil you know.

You can only really tell by checking the full type or model number against the makers lists, quite often there are clues like AGF or such like in the name.

Be careful with that mate, don't want to sound like the HSE but I have seen too many nasty things happen with people and batteries over the years, at least wear some please.

If it's any more than 30 months old I would count yourself fortunate and give the old girl an early birthday present.

Re: Piggin battery

Hi F-R-S
Yep i know what you mean about acid and the likes i opened it at arms length and away from me i must be getting wiser as the years pass
Tha battery is only 7 months old and hasn,t stood but we are just into summer here and an average of 33° for the past 3weeks !!! coming from a rather warm place yourself just wondered if HEAT could kill the battery(it was bloody hot when i took it out)
Phil

Re: Piggin battery

I have heard of the Cold killing a battery but not about Heat.
It is a possibility as for extremes but if that was the case nothing would work in the desert. You may just have a duff.

Re: Piggin battery

Phil,

From things I've read about batteries in the past on tinternet, you dont want to go adding more acid when a battery needs topping up, just distilled water!

The acid doesn't evaporate, the water does, so by adding more of the sulphuric stuff, your increasing the solution strength (specific gravity to the techy types) within the battery . Don't know what this might do to the inards of your battery though

Hope the re-charge helps.

My wife has thrown doubt on this ancient addage

Wot, Glasgow

Should still be under warranty at only 7 months, at least it's that way with the bigger sellers in the UK, Halfrauds and the like. When you took it out had you bee trying to start within teh previous half hour or was it just sitting? If it was 'hot' and there had been no load for a while it might indicate that there is an internal fault like a warped plate or flaked membrane causing an internal short which would definately generate heat. Those kind of faults are less common these days but not impossible. Only way to tell is take it into a battery sepcialist and get them to put a proper load tester accross it

I don't think 'normal' abmbient heat has a large impact on our sealed type batteries, certainly the big big boys out here regularly reporting 2 - 3 yr lifespans, no idea how old mine is, been in the bike since my mate originally bought it nearly 2 years ago now. The conversation around here is more who is selling cheapest "Wah! so cheap that one, Ah Boy selling to me + $5 last week only, cheat me oredi lah!"

I just remembered something else, there is the odd occurence of regulators failing and overcharging the battery, stick a volt meter on the battery and see what output you get at above 3000 rpm, if it's any more than 13.8 volts with a non faulty battery on it then that might be your answer.
