Check the terminal leads, it sounds like a loose wire.
It could also be the battery failing.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

...Twice on my Vara VA8....seemed like it was going to fail to start...then started OK, but as you noted clocks reset to 00:00...

Now.....I had this occur on an ST1300 I was riding earlier this year...Failure to start..clocks reset...in fact several times over a 13 week period...
Recovery called out twice and on both occasions after checking battery etc no fault found but bike then started OK.
The RAC patrol guy who attended on the 2nd such episode suspected the HISS....but what do I know??!!

One hint with the HISS....make sure you have no large metal key fobs that may shield the signal...

This used to happen to me every couple of months. Turned out that the battery was on its way out. Got a new battery and never happened since.

do you mean just the clock clock, or the tachometer clock? if its the time clock then that means a power failiure, as it goes to 00:00 when you take the battery terminals off. could be several things but look for basics first before worrying about expensive replacements. loose wire, corroded earth, that sort of thing. check the battery as its started getting cold in the mornings it may have died on you, they do go sudden like. get home, test the volts, then test again in the morning and see if its dropped off.

While it may have been a failing battery, its just as likely that disconnecting the power for 5minutes or so while you swap over bstteries has allowed something to reset itself. On my wife's smart car this seems to be a standard remedy when something electrical goes wrong.

does anyone watch C4s "I.T. CROWD"? reminds me of when Moss or the irish one answers the phone.....
    "hello, I.T...."
"have you tried switching it off and back on again?"

it gets even worse....on Virgin train Pendolinos they seem to quite frequently perform a train re-set. If thetrain is running slow or somethig else is up they stop it and announce a re-set. Basically it all comes to a halt, the engines stop, the lights go out and a few minutes later it all comes back on and off you go at full speed again.
