    kiill switch or starter motor????

    New problem with my Vara...

Its been stood for a about 6 weeks and I decided to start it today, which was difficult (ish). Got a sound and a feeling like the starter motor was spinning but not turning the engine. After about 5 goes all of a sudden the engine bursts into life (but nothing seemed to change, ie I didn't suddenly feel the engine turning) and ran at a fast tickover 'til warm and was fine. I decided the slow starting was just down to the 6 weeks and the cold.

But, an hour later when I came to put it back in the garage it wouldn't start at all, but different symptoms this time....

Ignition on....FI and HISS lights both go out after a couple of seconds; the fuel pump whirrs for a few seconds, headlights on fully bright. Everything looks OK. Press the starter buttom and click I hear a relay under the clocks, the lights go out, but no starter motor turning....nothing. Flick the kill switch on/off and the fuel pump whirrs again but still nothing other than the relay click. I have put the battery on charge, but its OK. There isn't much fuel, but that shouldn't be a factor.

Any ideas??? - my favourites are kill switch or starter motor (hopefully), or some horrible gremlin in one of the many sensors.

What happens if you press the starter button with the kill switch in "off". I can't rememebr if the engine spins but won't start or if it stops the engine spinning.

The only thing I did between getting it going earlier and trying to restart her was spray some WD40 onto the engine casings and other shiny bits. I have also now dowsed the kill switch in WD40, but haven't taken anything apart yet (was hoping it would just go away).

    Thoughts ideas???

It would not be an aftermarket immobiliser?
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

trying to start it in gear with the stand down. it caught my lad out and caused a 1 1/2 hour round trip to fix it, mind you it was nice getting one over on a smart arsed teenager, especially after a monumental tantrum

yep, that was it. If it hadn't gone dark and bloody cold I would have been taking the kill switch apart followed by cleaning connectors at the starter motor

Don't feel so bad. All us senior folk do it from time to time. I did it when doing some advanced training. F-ing and blinding at the bike after a couple of goes and couldn't start it.

Penny drops, light bulb on and steam of shame.
