    Re: oiler advice please

    Hi
I have put a ESystem Scottoiler on my bike.
Partly I chose this version because it was easy to install and the other was that there is a digital screen with quite a few details on them. The acceleration meter is of little use mind as I have more things on my mind when accelerating than to look at the screen. The outside temp and the reservoir volume left is good.

As a complete nugget with tools I was easy - all I seem to need was cable ties.
So far so good I have been out on it three times and it has behaved well. I appreciate the comments about the difference in temperature etc and as it is only about 4 degree at the moment I will have to let you know.

    Re: oiler advice please

ive got the snottoiler with HCR behind the numberplate.
it was easy to fit everything but the vac connection, i got the dealer to do that while it was in for a service and the tank was off anyway. they didnt charge or anything.
mine works a treat, still on the original oil that came with the kit. i dont have it turned up a lot, the recommended drippage is way too much i think.
i dont keep fiddling with mine, what is it that people are doing wrong? it might need turning up or down in winter/summer but thats simple physics and it means its working properly, right?

depending on what mileage you've done since fitting....If you ain't filling it..it ain't working!!!

I like the idea behind a total loss system...it should keep the chain cleaner and lubed...but in my experience it just makes a mess when it's "working" (not a real bad thing during the winter) and you don't notice 'til the chain is dry that it's not.....!

If you want to spend £00's on gadgets fair enough...but I can't see you getting your money back during the ownership of a bike...

Cheap and cheerful...Loobman if you have to have an automatic chain lubricator...or fix one yourself...it ain't rocket science!

btw...you can buy "anti fling" oil for lot's of applications...not just from Scott... and I'm quite fond of a quick dribble onto a warm chain (ooh err missus)! during the winter....chain wax in the summer!

Thumbs up Re: oiler advice please

Each to their own, but I have had about 6 bikes with scottoilers fitted and for me it's probably the first mod I make to a bike: my TA600 being a fine example...

With a scottoiler I have litterally done a few 1000 miles between adjustments: my TL1000s for example, the ZXR750 before that, a TDM since, Dommie etc: all bikes I rode all year....

Each time I have bought one, it has paid for itself in chain life several times over, and the chain is always spotless...

That said, I should add that I have bought far fewer than the number of bikes that have had one fitted: When I sold a bike, I simply disconnected and removed the scottoiler, re-capped the vaccuum cap on the carbs and off the bike went to a new own with an old but immaculate chain, whilst I have an oiler to fit to my next acquisition!

As for adjustment, I don't feel that you need to adjust it to get the same flow every day: some days a little more and some days a little less, either way they are getting more lube and more frequently than a spray from a can once a week.

When you get it fitted, make sure that the reservoir is easy to reach for refilling and adjustment. Personally I opt for securing the feed at the rear axle, onto the chain at the rear sprocket: it gets oil onto the inner links, or just infront of the sprocket so that it drips straight onto the pins in the middle. Centrifugal force then pushes the oil to the outside of the chain.

Dual feeders are not very good IMHO. My only attempt saw the feeder ripped off by the chain in the first 50 miles. A well positioned single feed is just as effective.

Loobman is cheap, simple to fit and works every time. I have a scottoiler on the Transalp but I prefer the Loobman on the Tiger.

Don't dismiss it just cos it simple and reasonably cheap.

guys great advise as usual ! Thank you very much plenty of options (EP90 and brush being very appealing tho) as I use the bike for main means of transport daily and it would be easy to keep a brush and a tin of oil by the door and give it a quick brush in the evening....
Thanks again tho you've all been very helpful!

I don't have a Scottoiler and I do 4000 miles between adjustments, i.e. the service interval.

    That's great!

I don't know what bike you ride or under what conditions, but my chain life on a sportbike was about 10-12000 miles, tops (decent chains, BTW). With the Scottoiler it was a lot more... For me, based on my personal experience the benfit of the oiler is very clear.

course im filling it, i said im on the original oil that came with the kit (500ml with the oiler, another 500ml with the HCR) not the original filling, that would just be silly

that litre has lasted me 8k miles since fitting. i have the oiler turned down from the recommended 2 drops a minute, thats way too much and thats probably why the doubting thomas' say they make a mess. i adjust it to keep the chain oiled, not my boot.
saying that i would rather have my bike covered in oil than salt and road grit.
this oiler came off my last bike which did 22k miles with one chain/sprocket change, which would have been £120. scottoil say it extends the life by a factor of seven, i dont know about that but i haven't adjusted my chain in 8000mi and if it makes the chain last only 3 times as long then it pays for itself.

    Scottoiler - top kit IMHO
Have the Tourer kit fitted from new by dealer
No mre faffing with lube, specially on at rip tp France etc
No chain adj needed in 8000m

Had one on my AT too, no probs and no need to adj chain in 15000m

My advice is get one, leave fitting up to your skill level
