I'm looking at getting a 5 speed varadero and I keeping seeing things like 'could do with an extra gear'. What revs do they do at 90-95mph? Is the lack of a sixth gear really a problem?
cheers

No need for sixth gear, unless you do high mileage and are worried about the cost of petrol... At least at 95MPH![]()
I have a 2007 six gears but from what I hear the 5 gears is almost as good
to be honest I am a light 21st's and on motorways once I go below 85/90 I find I have to downshift sometimes...
On standard gearing the carb'ed Vara will be at approx 6k rpm at 90mph.
Not personally having ridden an injected 6 speed Vara, I can't lend an opinion on them, but running with Afriajim, him on an injected bike and me with my carb'ed version, I can discern no real difference on pick up or cruising performance (but he does tend to take off quicker than me, and usually on one wheel, but he does than on whatever he rides). Fuel consumption wise, last run we did together, he used 1/2 litre less fuel than I did after 170 miles.
It's easy to tell when your cruising at this speed for a long time - the fuel light comes on a darn site earlier than when just cruising at 65 - 70 on single carriageways. Last long motorway haul at "elevated" cruising speeds saw the light show up after just 150 miles. Under normal riding conditions on local roads, it doesn't show till over 200
Just my ramblings . . .
