    Back firing Vara!!!!!

Hi guys, i wondered if anyone could shed any light on my vara's problem.
Its an 09 model which is suffering from a major running fault.
If your on over-run slowing down (IE for a 30 limit lets say) its backfiring through the inlet, enough sometimes to stop the engine if the clutch is in!!
It gets worse in the town, so far i have had it happen to me three times, the worst one on a slow manover round a tight bend just starting to add some throttle, It backfired, stopped the motor and i nearly dropped it. Had i not been 6ft 2. and 20 stone of horizontally challenged chap i think it would have gone down. As soon as i got home I immediately contacted the honda dealer i got it from (C J BALL NORWICH) and they agreed to look at it (its still under the HONDA warrentee) . Later that day i picked it up and was told they had checked the bike over had re-set the engine management (They showed me the read outs before and after, NOT MUCH DONE THERE!) "That should cure it" they said. They also told me "It was a twin thing and to give it more throttle".(This i would have done if would bloody let me, instead of Coughing and dieing)
On the way home it did it again but the engine just remained running.

Is this the best i am to expect? Can it be overcome with MODS (IE Power comander, Air filter Exhausts)
My mate has a R1200GS and this doesn't suffer from THE TWIN THING!!!
Have any of you heard of this before? Can anyone help with a solution.

    Regards (A Very Disappointed) Weeble.

Can't help on such a new bike, mine does not do it, carbadero... But check your exhaust gasket seals as they do sometimes go, hard to believe it's that on such a new bike...

    Re: Back firing Vara!!!!!

Mine has done exactly what you describe about 3 or 4 times and like you I nearly dropped it each time. I also used get a few smaller spit backs in the air box too. However it hasn't done it for ages now and definitely not since I had the quill cans put on. I also run a K&N air filter. In fact since the cans went on I would say it runs better than it ever did, but that could be because it just sounds so nice now.

I don't know what causes the spit backs and backfires, I assumed it was dirt or water in the fuel. I think there is a sensor that cuts the ignition if it senses very poor fuel and or running which is why it will stall.

    Re: Back firing Vara!!!!!

My '99 Vara banged and popped quite badly on the overrun. It was due to the exhaust seal on the rear cylinder down-pipe not being seated properly, the seal (which was quite new) was not seated all the way down and exhaust gasses were leaking from above it. With your bike, it may be that the dealer didn't check this as thoroughly as they might has done because exhaust seal failure on such a new bike is not something you would really expect. On mine I could feel the leak with my finger.

It does sound like your problem could be something more serious, but it's got to be worth checking the simple things first? Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon.

    Re: Back firing Vara!!!!!

mine started that on over run and yes, it was nearly new. it was the bottom exhaust gasket, one of the only 2 known commonish varadero faults (that and the rectifier, though thats a honda thing and they seem to have it sorted these days)
    fixed under warranty

also check the downpipe bolts, ive had those come loose before, as the gasket settles

    Re: Back firing Vara!!!!!

The symptoms I had and I think wEeble has is not popping in the exhaust on over-run but a distinct spit back into the airbox.

Years ago I had 250 that I ran without air filters. It ran lean and under certain circumstances would spit back into the carbs so hard they would fall off their stubs. This sounds and seems somewhat similar. I am now guessing at a fuel injection glitch or a bad sensor.

Anyway like I said mine hasn't done it for ages now.

I do not think a new bike should be doing that.
I would take it back to the dealer and tell them the problem is still there.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

ah yes austin, see what you mean now, if its not just a pop and a burble on overrun and its actually spitting out the inlet then thats not right, especially for a new bike

    Re: Back firing Vara!!!!!

Thanks for the rapid responce, i will check all of the above ASAP.
I agree it shouldn't do that, not a new bike.

I will update you with the findings.

    Once again, thanks.

    Regards Weeble.

Oh and i like the idea of the loud exhausts!!!!
