    Write off info

    I'm hoping that some of you knowledgeable folk on here will have an idea of how much the price of a bike drops once it's registered as an insurance write-off.

    I'm looking at a 98 Africa Twin with 23k on the clock and it's been a cat C write-off. Assuming average condition etc etc, any ideas on value with and without the write-off status?

    Cheers,

    M

    My personal opinion is it shouldn't really change the value that much, however it will give you a better bargaining position.

    All AT's are old, I would just satisfy yourself that the bike you are looking at has been repaired properly and is going to be reliable and satisfy your needs.

    Check for the worst AT gremlins, namely;

    Gearbox/Output shaft failure or welded sprocket
    Wheel corrosion
    Brake caliper corrosion

    Everything else is easy to live with.

    AT's are tough, and bikes are often written off just because of the price of repairing cosmetic damage, so it could be that the bike you're looking at had a trashed fairing and tank, but all the cycle parts were OK.

    There are plenty of AT's out there, so if it's not right, walk away.

    I'm not experienced with the later bikes, but I'd say a good 98 model would be around £2000 + or - with everything depending on condition and nothing else. The Cat C info may give you bargaining of a couple of hundred quid but not more. If the seller sold the bike outside of the UK, the Cat C would mean nothing at all.

    Good Luck

    Hi, bikes or cars that have been written off are worth less. Fact. They are hard work to sell and insurance companies pay out less if you have it stolen or you write it off. That said I would'nt have a problem buying a write off if it was cheap and repaired well, the problem is proving the damage and how it has been repaired. Hope this Helps Martin.

    I don't know if they're worth less, but you might have a good bargaining point.

    If the bike has been repaired correctly, it's no different than any other bike except in the view of any potential buyer, and probably the insurance company should the same bike got written off again (although I'd always challenge that for the above reason). The insurance company are able to check the bikes history easily, so if they know it's previously been written off, and in their eyes worth less, surely it should be cheaper to insure?!?! (I guarantee you it won't be!)

    Just my opinions really.
