Changing tyres - breaking the bead

    Hi,

I've just purchased some TKC 80s to put on my @. It had the Avon Distanzia and I want to play in the mud.

I inlisted the help of Anton88 (thanks very much mate wouldn't have been able to do it without you). I can't believe how difficult it was to break the bead on the rear tyre. I've changed a number of trials, enduro & speedway tyres but this I just wouldn't have done it on my own.

How the hell you'd do this stuck on a trail somewhere I just don't know.

So all you hardened tyre changes and pucture fixers please please please give me all your ideas how this can be done at home and out stuck in the middle of nowhere with just a couple of tyre levers.

    Thanks

I've no idea myself, I've tried on three tyres now and failed every time ! Gclamps, jumping up and down, levers, putting the sidestand on it, driving the car over it, they've all failed

There was an article about this in TBM last month. They say go for a short ride with the tyre deflated..??? Really aimed at smaller machines I suppose, but...

    do we have a volunteer..???

Tried that, didn't work. Also had a puncture at 90mph on the motorway and when I got home I still had to use my wind-down bead breaker in a couple of locations before the bead broke.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Hi mate,

I still have a few bead breakers in stock, used mine the other night on Chad's AT and certainly much less hassle than breaking the side stand

    £36 each if I recall correctly + p/p

I read somewhere (on here i think) that the rear rim on the @ is shaped so the tyre does'nt come off the rim when punctured.

Yen's experience would appear to bear this out.

I have not had to change the rear tyre on the @ yet, but changing my supermoto rear usually needs use of a 'bead breaker'

I used to do the short ride thing, worked for me If you have a mate of course you just use his side stand.
