    Tyres for a skint teenager

    My lad has this:

It has yonks old Mich knobblies that are cracking up round the sidewalls (and some of the knobs are showing cracking at their base - sounds nasty!). Sizes should be 3.00x21 front, 4.60x17 rear but it's wearing a 4.00x17 on the back for some reason. Converting proper inches into foreign muck gives us 90/90 and 120/90 - correct?

In common with all teenagers he is skint, so he needs to get new rubber for a minimal cash outlay but he doesn't want any old Chinese knock-off crap (binned his Suzuki 125 3 times on one wet day thanks to Chen Shins). As his riding is primarily road-based with the odd dusty gravel track thrown in he's looking for something along the style of Distanzias, Anakees and so forth, but a lot cheaper.

Looked around and came up with ContiEscapes at £86 for a pair - anyone had experience, good or bad, with these? Any other suggestions?

Try maxxis tyres from M&P if he wanted to stay on knobblies, they're cheap but reasonable quality especially as it's not really a high powered bike.

    Thier C858 universal is 300-21 @ £22.99 and 460-17 @ 25.99

Chen Shins are crap, maxxis at least have a bit of an up and coming reputation and if you do a search on them a lot of people are giving good reviews.

Errrrr.......Maxxis are rebadged Chen Shins, but you were just testing me 'coz you knew that already didn't you?

Still, the general reviews reckon they're not bad at all, especially when you consider the price!

Nope, never knew that, just remember some reviews on them and as I was very recently scanning throught the latest M&P catalogue I thought I'd point you in that direction.

The thing is that Chen shin will produce excellent tyres for thir top range and crap tyres for thier bottom range (same as most companies do) and thier Maxxis branded tyres as stated are getting a good rep.

Oooh, a couple of clapped-out Michelins swapped for a nubile 18 year old ..... .

Brings a new meaning to having a quick fettle in the shed, would also bring an entirely new, higher range to my vocal abilities if the wife ever found out, so I think I'll have to pass.

Check out this site. Just punch in your tyres sizes and look at the choice: have a look at Heidenaus.

There's not a teenager on the planet with the stamina to keep up with her all day long.......

If she ever reads this I'm sooooooo deep in the warm brown smelly stuff even MudWiz couldn't get me out!
