We have had this debate before on here , re the effectiveness (or not) of Slime - and other in tyre puncture sealants.
Well I can report that Slime works - to a degree !!!
I ragged the rear Pirelli of the 990 WAY! beyond it's limits while Chad was here last weekend. Yesterday I left work a wee bit earlier than usual to go and get a new one , and Sod's law - when I got to the bike shed the rear was flat !! After the old , what the hell do I do now ? RAC? / KTM recovery? / torch it? / leave it overnight and hope the elves will fix it? , - I found a workmate with a leccie pump and we gave it a whirl. We discovered air pissing out a hole and turned the hole to the bottom , where, traa-raa !! the slime seamed to do what it claimed and stop the leak !! we got 40lbs into it and it seamed to pretty well sound.
So I decided to run for home with stops at a couple of fuel stations on route to top-up if required. I stopped after about 5 miles of normal running at Wemyss Bay and got about 15 lbs in. Then ran another 6 miles to Largs where , try as I might , there was no way I could get it to hold air. The slime had done it's work for 11 miles and had slowly escaped and splattered over the rear mudguard. I then took my time and rode the half mile or so to the ferry with a tyre with about 10 lbs in it , got on the ferry where the tyre was flat as a pancake.
I then decided to try a wee test , as the tyre was goosed anyway and getting replaced , I decide to try and see if I could limp home on a total flat if really required. I rode the last 4 miles home , standing on the pegs , weight well forward , head over bars , at around 15 MPH with the tail squirming - made it with no real grief , a bit like riding on wet grass !!!
Leasons learned .........
1) Slime works - to a degree
2) You can ride an adventure bike with a rear flat if required to get out of trouble - no way I would try it on a sportsbike !!!!
3) I should have changed the tyre last week when I saw it near it's limits - not after 800 miles of riding with Chad !!!
4) I will start to carry my wee portable leccie pump from now on !!!
