Cam Chain Tensioner XL250 RFVC

On an 86 model.

In the Clymer manual it says pull up the tip of the tensioner and insert a piece of wire in the hole.

I can't see any hole! I've pulled it up as far as I can, plus pushed in the tensioner down in the chain tunnel but no hole can be seen. The problem being that it will be very difficult to put the cam back on without the tensioner backed off.

The tensioner shows pretty much no wear so I'm wondering if its been replaced and for whatever reason has no hole, a pattern part perhaps?

Any experience/ideas?

Thanks....

Steve

The hole sits around 9 o'clock as you look from the right side. I used an alan key with a socket jamed under it.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner XL250 RFVC

Had a look today . . . . no hole

However if you push/hold the 'plunger' down you can push the tensioner guide back with a screwdriver, or just pull the chain up to alter the valve timing.

Memory not good, but seem to recall leaving the cam sprocket bolts out till last (or was that the 600 ).

Ok, thanks anyway. I will work out what to do now I've gone a bit deeper and can take the tensioner out:

The screen needed a clean!

That's a lot of metal in there. Have you found what's breaking up?

Here's a crap pic of the nx head. You can just see the hole.

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner XL250 RFVC

Here's a better one

What I've done is take the whole tensioner out and work with a loose chain, then compress the spring and tie it down with a bit of string, slot the now-docile thing back in the bike, and cut the string.

This is my NX 650. I don't know how similar the 250 is, though.

edit: Found your other threads. The 250 head does look a bit different from its bigger brothers, sorry...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner XL250 RFVC

Thanks guys...

Yes, mine is a different design, but same principle of needing compressing before reassemble.

Good idea with the string, I will do that I think!

The bits on the filter I will post on another thread after some more investigation (I already have an idea, let me take some pics!)

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner XL250 RFVC

Well there was definitely no hole on mine but found a way to pre-tension it with the tensioner removed, will post pics later. I also verified that the chain was indeed fooked, so a new one fitted.

- 46 quid, blimey!
