Bits in Filter Screen (XL250)

So, this pic looks a bit worrying

But cleaned in some spirits and this is what’s left

Mainly bits of gasket and cement, and just a few very small slivers of aluminium.

Now, here’s a thing, the clutch basket has some damage on it:

Zoom in:

One of the springs has pushed through the case, which appears to be very thin just here.

I’m not worried as the springs don’t normally bear against this part anyway, as they fly outwards on some ramps when the engine is running, shown here:

Well, that’s my opinion, anyone want to comment?

Steve

it depends on when the screen was last cleaned out but it does not look too bad.
As for the clutch basket, how old is it and was it misassembled the last time?

Well I have no history for the bike, it looks like the filiter has not been touched for a very long time. The clutch basket, well again hard to know, I wonder if bump starting could have done the damage as the springs would not be in their correct load bearing position.

Anyway, nothing appears terminal so its all going back together in the next few days, with a new cam chain.

It looks like the casting is faulty. I'd check that there are no loose bits of alloy on it and that the spring is not in danger of making a bid for freedom through into the clutch pack where the damage would be catastrophic.

The springs don't fly outward on ramps (like rollers in twist and go transmissions). They are there as part of the cush drive in the back plate and should be a snug fit. If they are loose and rattling about, the basket is shot and should be replaced otherwise it will end up putting metal fragments into the oil which will destroy the top end.

Yes, you are right on both counts. I have decided therefore to get a new basket, 40-quid delivered from Dave Silvers.... a no-brainer at that price (well, assuming its the right one, I will find out in a couple of days!)

Some of those bits in the photo look like cam chain tensioner blade bits.I have seen this on a few bikes with a few miles on the bores. If the debris returns after the next 500 miles I would be a little concerned, otherwise i'd just ride on.
