    Newbie with xl250re.

Hello all, first time here and thought i'd say hi

I bought my first Honda xl250rc new back in 1982, so last year i bought this xl250re off ebay in memory of it !!

It came with 2 incomplete rfvc engines. One was cooked so bad that the electrics had melted
And the other had been bought at a car boot sale with a duff crank and snapped camshaft.
Mistake number one was thinking i would have no trouble buying a replacement rfvc engine.
And mistake number two was thinking "no worries,i'll put a early model non rfvc engine straight in''.

Anyway, it took a lot of cutting and fabrication but i have got the early engine in and running. Also now painted in original Honda red, but undicided on if i should paint in the number board section of the side panels and front headlight surround!!

    How it looks now.

    How it looked before.

Nice bike. I use to have the XL200RC a few years ago, great greenlaner. Welcome to the site.

Probably all rusting away in sheds with duff head and canshaft, a common problem. Lots of good modern replacements now though, and not all orange!

    Now that looks nice.

The joy's of having a disc brake

I hope the xr400 was easier to start than the XL500rc i used to have, how i never broke my knee cap on the handlebar i'll never know

Yea i had the Yam for 7 years took it to France a few times, greatest place for greenlaning, a 'leccy start XR would be ideal but a bit scarce. Don't really fancy the alternatives eg DRZ400 or KTM. Used to have a BSA B40 pre-65 trials that could be a bit spiteful.

    Nice job

I got a xl250re with a blown engine a while back (dropped valve smashed head) waiting for a head to turn up, but i suspect I'll end up breaking it.

If you do break it, don't hope on fleabay for selling to much.

I put half a dozen items on there and didn't get one bid on anything, and that was with a 99p starting price

I do have a box full of spare parts, but the heads are both knackered, sorry !!

You have made a nice job of your bike there Andy, well done mate, DIYs are miles better than shop brought ones.
