    Why is it that..

hey guys just wondering.. but my chain seems to get slack reallllly quickly??

is it time for a new one? maybe chain and sprocket kit? iv done about 5,500 miles on it and iv never changed the chain or sprockets (however i have lubed the chain etc)

how long do either of these items last? is my chain slackening off quickly due to ware or something else??

    cheeerssss!

If you are having to constantly adjust your chain, then I would suspect the front sprocket is on its way out. I don't know about your XL, but on my Transalp there is a cover to remove to inspect the front sprocket and the gear lever has to come off to do this. An easy job.

You would probably be better off fitting a complete chain and sprocket set. Your chain is obviously past its best anyway and it is always a good move to do the full monty.

    Hope that helps.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

As Lutin says, if it needs a lot of (frequent) adjusting, then it's on it's way out.

Only replace as a complete set !!!!

I know its frustrating as the front sprocket "usually" seems to wear half as fast as the rear but its a sure fire way to screw your chain up if you dont replace as a set.

cool thanks guys thats cleared alot up! iv found a chain and sprocket set on ebay for about 40 quid (new)

that sounds quite cheap to me? its the front and rear sprocket with a new chain

is that some nasty cheap and cheerful kit or are they all roughly the same and do the same job?

Looks cheap and nasty to me..

If you dont want to pay genuine Honda prices, JT Sprockets are almost as good and usually a fair whack cheaper.

You local bike shop should be able to order them for you. You really want an O-ring chain if you want it to last but seeing as its a little 125, you cant really go wrong...

Got my complete chain and sprocket set from Dave Silver for my 600V, they couldn't have been more helpfull, went for genuine Honda as it was recommended on this site, something to do with the front sprocket not being so good if you go for after market. They sent the wrong one to start with (boxed shape spline) but no hassle with the exchange, cost about £80.00.
Wish I'd see the "garage night" video before i did it cos I didn't have a breaker/rivet kit so had to improvise.....i made a lot harder work of it than they did
