Hi Clis, well as you said there is no way to adjust the ignition timing as it shouldn't need adjusting; have you raised the compression?

OK you can raise the torque of these engines by adjusting the cam timing as you can see from 'performance' cams there's 5? degs of difference.

OK the ignition timing is fixed by the cdi so you'll have to retard the cam timing, I'd get another top sprocket and start drilling some new holes 5 degs either side of the one you have and experiment.

Either that or (if it's a CR issue) raise the cylinder deck?

    Any other ideas anybody?

maybe the bottom crank sprocket has moved or is not in the right place.
i have looked at all of my crank sprockets when i have the engines apart and they are all in a slightly different place, sometimes when they are replaced in a workshop they are not lined up correctly.

Hi Stretchy and Hondaxrnut, thanks for your replies I will try altering cam timing and see what happens, will let you know.as for raising the compression no i have not.the bike had same pre ignition fault before rebuild,so not using bike till fault rectified because do not want to damage new piston.

Don't ride anymore and is a year or two since I sold mine but I understand the problem.

It's a dreadful design and very weak.

If the surface is scored or out of round the little cylinders (3?) wont engage the surface.

So if it's damaged you'll have to find a cleaner one.

It's an Italian model that's why no-one recognises it and it's not fitted to any other bike (that I know of).

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

    Stretchy.

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

Cheers Stretchy sorry to hear you arn't riding any more , I just thought that with it being a week design point that some one out there must have found an answer to the problem or do they just scrap them??, I have wondered if it would be feasible to put it back to kick start ??is the inner casing drilled where the kicker shaft fits is there the gear teeth on the clutch basket ??? ,or if one of the Chinese Li fan starter gears would fit ??? I bought the bike to take on the back of a camper van and it is spot on once running and was surprised how much I enjoyed it even did a lap of the TT course 1hr 2 min 20sec flag to flag complete with loose chippings and even had to overtake a Ford Escort ,all right it was coming down the mountain and did have a little go on the bouncy stuff down one of there trail roads and that has wetted the taste buds of an ageing old road rider that is still daft enough if not young enough to take on some thing new , Oh well come on silly old fool run run run and don't forget to jump , and it dose help if you have switched it on and and the kill switch is in the run position , this is a lot to remember for an old fart with fast approaching alzheimers , HELP HELP

No the inner casing is not drilled but you could stick any 125 engine in there, just have to match the mounting holes but sure you could get a bracket made, Yes bit of a 'mare as it's very hard to find parts or info. I had two and a 125RF (v.nice!) 2*XR400 (both electric start), TTR250 in black and and XR250R which was pants! ALL the others were superb!

Going 'Off Road' is great fun and there's still plenty of UCR's and Byways to have a go at.

    Good luck!

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

Cheers Sretchy ,so that has saved me taking the clutch cover off and rules out the kicker idea so looks like the
chinese rep 200 could be next thing to rule out and if that runs a muck its an Ebay job which would be sad as I do rather like the thing ,just a min while I get my breath back all this running ,there again with all this exercise I will end up as fit as ?? as??well any other silly old fart that still has not matured in to adult hood

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

i reckon the starter mechanism is not much different than the xlr one, as they both, from what i have seen, seem to be identical.
these chinese copies could well be the same as well sometimes they come up cheap on eaby just the engine, but make sure its an ohc one, you can tell an ohv one as it has the round adjuster halfway uf the cylinder on the left.
i am putting my elec start xl200r engine into a kx 125 frame for enduro days.
    good luck
sorry to hear stretchy is not riding anymore, pity.
