XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

There are quite a few of these around, I know I have two. Basically a low compression XR200 with 'leccy start and no kick. The Marzocchi forks are a bit of a problem as they have none standard seals; otherwise a simple fix as most bits in common with other bikes. I like to hear from anyone who has the same machines we maybe of use to each other!

All the best from Bristol, UK

Stretchy.

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

Hi,
I'm just rebuilding one of MD06 (italians), now I got to the point where I must put electrics on. As I'm trying to make it dirt track bike (like) it's quite mess. I try to put on some pic's as soon as I find out how...

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

Nice one Ed, lets see those pictures!

I now have mine MOT'd so off to get it registered this week.

Rode it down to the MOT station, first time I've really ridden it and taken it thru' all the gears. Had to adjust the clutch cable up but that was all. Sounds nice and chuggy! Can't wait to get it out in some dirt!

I'd recommend some Kings tyres as they're nice and cheap, be careful with the profile on the rear as my 'other' XL had a profile so large is fouled the swinging arm even tho' someone had ground it away to clear!

I can send you decent piccies if you need to see where all the wires go...............

Stretchy.

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

when i bought mine the engine was rattley so stripped engine, rebored, new wiseco piston, because honda do not do oversized piston.now rebuilt runs fine, but timing too far advanced so pinking and pre ignition on start up(so can anybody tell me if you can alter the timing,as there is no adjustment on cam like uk models

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

You 'DID' fit a new cam chain didn't you?

Timing is rather easy, OK................

Remove 2 (allen key) covers from LHS of engine and undo two 8mm bolts from the LHS engine top to reveal cam sprocket.

With a 14mm deep socket and bar rotate the engine by hand (through the larger of the allen key holes) and look through the smaller of the allen key holes to find 'T' there's also 'F' and 'II'.

'T' is Top Dead Centre and altho' this position can be found twice (every 180 Degs) you want the one that occurs when Piston is at TDC, may as well take off the valve covers so you can wiggle them to make sure they're both loose (they wont be if your on the wrong part of the stroke).

OK you've got it all lined up now?

How's the cam sprocket looking?

It has a small indent (dot) and this should be pointing straight up towards a small notch.

It should be bang on.

Your advance can be checked when the engine is running but is a pain in the ass as whilst you try and shine your timing light in the hole (small allen key one) oil will come flying out because of the crankase pressure. I think it's 'F' at idle (1250rpm?) and max advance 'II' at 4250?, don't quote me....

Anyway check the 'T' and 'dot' marks line up and also whilst your there rotate the engine with the 14mm socket and check the timing chain tension at various places, I found mine went slack (very) then tight so was repalced (£10).
You have adjusted the tension of the chain haven't you?

Let us know how you get on.

Stretchy.

p.s. piston wise you can fit a Kawasaki 750 piston in there, I think it give 220cc?

Re: XL200R Italian MD06 Frame and Engine

cheers strechy,to your first question yes,new cam chain, slider blade, tensioner blade, gaskets etc.cam timing fine its ignition timing is the problem.on british models you can adjust timing by altering back plate on cam but no option italian model.
