The bike does not have to have the lights on all the time, leave the switch as is and when your battery is struggling, you could switch them off.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: trail bike lights mot

My 1992 XLR200 has lights on all the time and is totally original. I think it is because it is an imported bike and the original market perhaps had laws making daytime lights a legal requirement. The bike copes with it ok though, especially since it only has an electric start. The generator on your bike may well be the same, and should therefore be up to it.

Sometimes I wish it had the option of switching off the lights, both for battery preservation if it hasn't been used for a while and also to avoid grabbing attention at dusk whilst going off road somewhere. I might therefore just trace through the wiring and add a simple switch. At least it will give me the option.

If you want to switch your lights off, just trace through the wiring with a meter and find the feed to the dimmer switch. This will probably also feed off to the rear light, so you need to break into the cable at some point before both the dimmer switch and the rear light. Once you have found the correct point in the cable, connect your switch in series with the two parts of the cable.

Having lights on all the time is ok. . . . .my xr600 is a european model and lights are on all the time.
my advise would be keep the on / off switch, unless its giving problems.

Fortunate you got a puncture and found the brake fault before it caused an accident.
