Just wondering how you got a MOT without the V5 or frame number?

I bought an unregistered XL250 and first had to MOT and insure it on the frame number, then pay import duty and VAT and then have it inspected at my local DVLA office, before they would register it and give me the V5.

If you do go this route be careful as you only have 2 - 4 weeks from starting the insurance on the frame number to get all the paperwork done and give them the reg. number. Or they cancel it and keep most of the premium even though you didn't want it cancelled in the first place.

    Uncle Nick -
I've heard of this before, but it has never happened to me - yet! I have two unregistered bikes insured on the frame number only and have never had a problem. The only thing I can think of is that neither is the primary bike on the policy. Instead, they are just the extra bikes on a classic policy, with my registered XLR200 as the main bike.

How do the DVLA have grounds to charge you import duty? Have you imported it yourself? I have registered two imported bikes (both originally from the USA), but since I bought them in the UK, I just went through the registration process and the import duty issue was never even mentioned. Am I just lucky? The duty had in fact been paid by previous owners, but I could't have proved that had I been asked.......
