    XL back to original camshaft

My XL600R has recently gotten its original camshaft back (I've been using an XR camshaft for years because it was all we could get at the time) so I can now inform you all about the differences.

    XL with XR camshaft:
    • doesn't run as smoothly in lower revs
    • uses a bit more petrol
    • gives a very satisfying 'kick in the rear' above 5500 revs
    • may even give you some extra horsies
XL back to its proper camshaft:
    • appears to have a bit more 'oomph' in lower revs
    • will definitely run more smoothly in low and very low revs
    • is a bit more economical
    • will slowly start to fall asleep above 5500 revs, but is fine below that
    • will need some carb adjustment because it's running a tiny bit too lean right now
All in all, it's not a bad trade off either way.

Re: XL back to original camshaft

    Hi!

I have already sent you an email, but I thought this is the right place to post this, so that everyone can benefit from it (although I hope no one needs to )

My Honda XL 600 LM has a broken camshaft right now. Here in Spain (and almost everywhere I think) it seems impossible to find a replacement parto, and I am looking for solutions.

I have seen this post, and now I guess it is possible to use a XR camshaft to replace the original one, isn't it?? Where did you get it from?

Even so, I would like to know as much as possible before doing it...if you don't mind telling me! How did you do the change? The XR camshaft has a decompressor built in it, did you remove it? I have seen some of them (hotcams.com for example) which already come without the decompressor. Was yours one of those?

How long have you been riding with the XR camshaft on? Years? Have you had any problems? Did you have to adjust the carbs when you first changed it?

You talk about a horsepower gain...really? Will I even ride faster? COOOOL

Well, as you can see I have a million questions, but I don't want to write such a long and boring post... so I'll stop now!!

Thanks a lot and see you around here!

I had a new camshaft from David Silver Spares - HOME, was a couple of years back though. Could be worth a try.

Forget that, seen you've already tried them.

Really?? Do you have a XL600 camshaft? Would you sell it to me? Now I have borrowed a XR camshaft to measure and make sure it works in my machine, but I'd rather ride with an original camshaft, of course. We could contact somehow and talk about that, if you want. You can find my email here:

    Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Happy to see you're not dead, anyways!

mad4it028: I am not sure of the price of these things...how old is it (kilometers/miles)? Is it in good condition? I have to trust you, since I am not able to see it.

David Silver lists the XL camshaft at 99 pounds new (although they don't have it any more) so I guess a second hand can't be more than around half that price (40-50 pounds), don't you think? Then there's shipping costs (which I don't know. Could you find that out??)... We can talk about it. Tomorrow I will be trying a XR camshaft anyways, so I might just use it in case the price goes too high...

Re: XL back to original camshaft

Great then! 25 pounds sound way better than 50 (which after postage would have probably been too much) Don't worry about doing it right away...first recover from your opps, and then we talk about times and costs, ok?

Mine is also an old XL600LM (rear drum brake also), probably not the same model, but both of them share engines, so no problems about that, I think.

Whenever you are ready for the "engine operation", I'll be here waiting for you. I might go on with the tests on the XR camshaft, so I'll let you know if I find a solution to my problem before having your camshaft here, ok?

    Good luck with your recovery!
