My XL600R has recently gotten its original camshaft back (I've been using an XR camshaft for years because it was all we could get at the time) so I can now inform you all about the differences.
XL with XR camshaft:
XL back to its proper camshaft:
- doesn't run as smoothly in lower revs
- uses a bit more petrol
- gives a very satisfying 'kick in the rear' above 5500 revs
- may even give you some extra horsies
All in all, it's not a bad trade off either way.
- appears to have a bit more 'oomph' in lower revs
- will definitely run more smoothly in low and very low revs
- is a bit more economical
- will slowly start to fall asleep above 5500 revs, but is fine below that
- will need some carb adjustment because it's running a tiny bit too lean right now
