    honda xl 125r 1986

    HI GUYS

i havnt been on hear for aaaaaages but basicly i have a honda xl 125r the 1986 model.

Its getting on a bit and about 2 months ago it finally blew up!

I dont know exactly whats wrong with it, i am assuming its the head gasket but with work and family i havnt got time to investigate.

I am asking what engines fit into the frame, as this is a late model i dont really know what fits what so im asking for your help.

I am wanting to put a new or second hand engine in there. It is originally a 125cc but if anything bigger fits then thats ok too.

here are some pictures of the bike.

Hi Joe looks like your not too far from me as I'm in Bristol.

OK any XL/XR 125 or better still 200cc engine will fit with minor mods.

I'd try and get an (MD06) XL200R engine as they're 'leccy start.

    Good luck!

Why not just fix the engine? Headgasket is a piece of P**S to do!

You can have the engine out and completely stripped in a couple of hours as it's a very simple design.

    Have fun!

Well i work every day and at weekends i go see my girlfriend so i actually have no time.

I probably could do it if i had a guide but with the lack of time and knowlage i was thinking of just buying a new lump and bolting it in there.

A number of people have said "why dont u just fix the old one" and the reason being is i dont know how, and if i was to take it to a motorcycle dealers theyde charge me a bomb because thats what there like round hear.

If i could send it to someone on hear who would do it for little cost of mabey just parts and return postage then ide be up for that. But its just trying to find that person.

    thanks alot

They say your never to old to learn! (not sure of your age but I'm 45).
There really is nothing simpler than a small bore 4 stroke and you'll save yourself a pile of money! I stripped and rebuilt my 200 with a bit of help and advice via e-mail and I've never touched an engine before, mind you I'm an Electronic engineer so ancient technology comes easy!

Clymer manuals are very good especially for begineers but the usual one (Haynes?) is fine and you can find it on the web, so have a read and then ask questions on here?

I hear you tho' as just getting another lump and bolting it in is easy but you may need the carb and CDI too?

Parts are easy to find, have a look but an engine will be a bit more difficult and a lot more money. A head gasket cost nothin' and you just undo some bolts to lift the head but not really sure what is wrong with your motor.

There is a great deal of satisfaction to be had as you know it's done right (hopefully!)

    All the best.

    Stretchy

p.s. No-one's going to work for nothing so you best learn yourself!

    Re: honda xl 125r 1986

the only engine that would go straight in with no other mods needed is a same age xl185/200 motor, if you do not have an elec start 125 engine in it now then an elec start one will fit physicaly, but the wiring is different, and the battery is generaly larger.
if you do not get the same age engine the ignition could be different and a few other things may not be the same.
i would take the engine out and have a look, a good haynes or clymer manual would tell you all you need to know.
unless you have done the big end or mains in, the engine is easy to fix and not too expensive as it is only a 125, you need to know what you have done to the engine.
i am closer than stretchie, but its still too far to push it.
if it is just a head gasket then you are talking 1/2 day and about £20 inc postage.
let us know how you get on.

    Re: honda xl 125r 1986

    hi guys,

the engine is electric start but i was told by the RAC mechanic who pickd it up when i broke down that the thermostat is broke? dont quote me on that, as it was ages ago and i cant remember what he said lol.

I am 17 years old but ive just started an apprentichip early for the new education year in september, so work is a bit tough atm as im doing loads of different stuff and i dont have any spare time.

I will try and do the engine myself, i no a guy thats into bikes ill ask him about it.

Ill post pics when i get the head off.

    Joe

you do not have a thermostat on that engine, so it must have been something else, what exactly happened, we may be able to diagnose it here.
    describe it in detail.
