    XLR 250 Degree

Hello all, as this is my first post i'd like to say hello...!

I've just bought a XLR 250 Degree Jap import from ebay. It was bought as a non-runner and i've got it running (idle is a bit shakey though). I've got a couple of questions, I've downloaded the NX250 manual which is apparently same engine, does anyone know if there is a manual for the XLR 250 Degree?

I'd like to either replace the seat or get a cover - anyone got any ideas where i could get one?

There is a problem with the engine cutting out when i put in gear - im assuming this is the clutch switch - but does anyone know if there is a sidestand switch for this model?

Any help will be greatfully received
    Cheers
    Rob

I can tell you that my XLR 125 had a side stand switch... not sure if that means the 250 did too?

If you take a look at it you should be able to tell, there will be a cable leading to where the stand closes at the hinge.

Clutch switch easily bypassed (not sure if o/c or s/c) sidestand switch, have you looked?!

Both totally pointless and need removing anyway!

The manual can be found by Googling 'xr250 manual' tis the first hit via thumpertalk, not too hard to find

    Good luck with it!

Thanks for that - i found the sidestand switch has been bypassed, reconnected and now its ok... I should have seen the big sidestand light and guessed that there was a switch ... duh!

Took it for a quick once round the garden and its died -

Thanks for the manual - i wasn't sure if these were the same as the XR250R - still downloading though!

    Re: XLR 250 Degree

Well after stripping down the carb, cleaning out the tank, checking all the connections. Its not starting.

There is a good spark, fuel is getting to the carb, there is suction on the back of the carb if i put my hand over it, there is fuel on my hand when i do it... so im lost???

Any clues as to what to look at next - a bit desperate now to find out what the problem is?

    cheers

    Re: XLR 250 Degree

CDi/Timing possibly, My XLR200 cuts out randomly too and 'Feels' like something electrical.

You have Spark/Fuel/Compression, which is ALL you need but if the spark is not happening at the right time.............

I'm sure the manual will be fine, the differences between models are minimal.

    Although I know it's been running check the obvious first;

Rotate engine by hand (plug out) using long socket thru' LHS, line up the marks and check the cam chain never goes loose.

I'd measure the leads coming out of the genni for continuity and double check the disabling switches are out of circuit, I'd solder them out if you can.

I take it it's 'leccy start? Get someone to press the button whilst you wiggle ALL the wires (tank and seat off, make sure fuel in carb) as that's what I'll be doing with mine next.

Good luck and DO let us know what the problem was.

Don't forget to use a NEW plug as I had one that went totally short circuit.

    Re: XLR 250 Degree

I've had the carb off again today, and im almost sure its not the problem, but i'll use some carb cleaner on it later.
It says that its a KEIHIN VE36, but i cant find any information on this - I can see that its a CV type though?
If the spark is at the wrong time shouldn't i get some backfire or spark through the carb?

I was thinking about disabling the clutch switch - but i am not sure of the best way - or even what this switch does, could this be part of the problem?

Thanks for all your help so far
    Rob

    Re: XLR 250 Degree

The clutch switch will only disable the starter solenoid so you can't start it in gear (unless the clutch is pulled in).

I'd keep looking for something electrical on the CDi/coil side of things as that is what is sounds like.

Mechanical things either work or don't but electrical faults can be intermittent.

I've got to ride across town on mine now and I now it'll conk out on the MWay rounderbout again!

    Re: XLR 250 Degree

It appears that this is a XL 250 Degree, i've tried the diagnosis and the meter i've got isn't up to the job. So i suspect that the CDI unit is gone..

Any suggestions on the best place to get one?
