Talking with the chap that runs Westcountry Windings (just been there to get my XR650 stator rewound) ... he also gets involved in repairing CDIs. Maybe worth a chat:

    What tips did they give??

I'm still unsure if mine is playing up or not. Will have a bit more time to have a look at the weekend. Have noticed it will backfire occasionally when it cuts out, so may be a lean out/air leak but still could be the CDi giving the wrong timing.

    Re: XL 250 Degree CDI

They told me to recheck all the resistance and the coil, which i did.
I found that the XR650L shares the same wiring and some tips on the web.

There is a wiring diagram on thumpertalk thats downloadable. But basicly the tips are to diable the safety stuff like the stand switch (dark green and geen/white) connected them together and link them to ground cut and insulate the yellow/black. Then disable the clutch switch connect the wires together and link this to earth.

The tip that i received from the guys in NL that repair the CDI is that if the bikes starts to misfire the CDI is suspect and it should be investigated.

I've checked and double checked the wiring and i am just waiting to get the CDI...

As suspected mine had an intermittent wire (green/black), the wire had corroded and wasn't obvious until came out with a firm tug! I'd still check your connections by removing the small rubber bungs in the back of the connectors and if the wire doesn't come out with a tug it will be fine. You really need to press down the locking tang from the front with a small flat blade so the connector comes out so it can be properly inspected. Mine looked clean from the outside so wasn't obvious.

Hi don't know if it helps but i was stuck once many moons ago and used one from a scrapped Honda Melody on XL125RC '83. The multi pin connecter was smaller but same layout/wire colours so spliced into loom. Worked ok. Still works ok.

    Re: XL 250 Degree CDI

Well i've now got a spark after replacing the CDI and the battery which had an intermittent internal short (not sure if this was the reason for the CDI blowing).
I've looked at all the connectors, pulled apart the loom and re done any dodgy looking connections.
Thats the good news, i've now got a problem where i cant get it to start. I thought it might be the carb, so i stripped this down again, cleaned the plunger with wet and dry with wd40, used carb cleaner on everything and blew it out with a airline.

There is fuel getting to the bore as the spark plug is soaking in fuel, there is compression but it doesn't even try - blimey this has got me foxed - any ideas chaps?

Thanks again for all your help

    Cheers
