I've never had a problem...except the time I rode past a red flag and the wardens pounced! I know it sounds stupid but I didn't see it!
Apart from that stick to the byways and keep speeds sensible then no problems. I've met a variety of tanks and other vehicles up there along with soldiers who have always been friendly. Loads of tracks but nothing especially challenging but being on my doorstep I can't complain.
Must get the XL back on the road!!

That must be a fantastic place to ride, so much area.

I have often wanted to go onto Dartmoor but am sure that is out of bounds as a national park especially with the sheep and ponies dotted around.
There are red flag areas too for the ranges, would not want to stray into there either

I had an XL600R back in the mid 80's, loved it, was after one but nothing about so I went for an XT600E, very simliar bike actaully but the XT is quite a bit heavier, maybe 75lbs but then so am I now.

The missus tries the XL250SA for size just before I sold it. She quite liked the idea of having a go but didn't like the idea of having to kickstart the thing...& the getting dirty bit.

One sunny Sunday along the Pilgrims Way in Kent.

well spotted but sadly nope, the pic is from the garage in Edinburgh i bought it from. I need to put some new pics up. I just reread my post and it reads as if i just took it, whoops. i've added black decals on the lamp shroud and the side panels, and popped the white 'xl500r' letters on top those at a jaunty angle- so not exactly kosher original but looks neat i think. anyway you can judge when i put a fresh pic up!

i like the twin headlamp idea, anyone seen that done on an xl500??

also.... my side stand bent again today, weak spot, i've bent it back once already, it can't be long for this world. i've had a google but can't see any for sale - any home brew solutions out there

    cheers

If you've got a friend who can weld, s/he could add a rib to reinforce it.

Alternatively, saw it in half, insert a piece of massive steel rod, weld it back together. Quite elegant... no one will be the wiser.

brilliant, i love that steel rod idea and yes i have a mate who is my part-time technical director...many thanks

AS the bike was Italian for a while, i'd like to think it was caused by some cool skinny Italian dude, gathered with his mates in some town centre, warm evenings, repeatedly sitting sideways on the bike with the stand down, drinking espressos and chain smoking while flirting with beautiful women as they admire his cool bike

I would do that, except the stand would immediately snap and I'd drop my chips..
