I actually often put the bike on the side stand for starting it... since I'm, shall we say, vertically challenged. Or maybe the word is 'compact'.

If you've got a friend who can weld, s/he could add a rib to reinforce it.

Alternatively, saw it in half, insert a piece of massive steel rod, weld it back together. Quite elegant... no one will be the wiser.
