    Service intervals

So I popped into my nearest Honda dealer to get some bits for the tranny, had a wander around and swung my leg over a couple of XRs. A tidy 05 XR650 I think, and an older XR200; both very nice...

My question, is the service interval for these things measured in hours?

Especially like the cheap and simple plastics!

Also, I know they're off road bikes but what sort of speed could your potter/cruise at??

    Cheers

    Hi.
I do a service on my XR 400 every 1000 miles,I change the
Oil and filter, and do all the routine maintance .My Last XR did 22,000 miles with no engine problems at all, only thing that wore out was wheel and head stock bearings and C_s and break pads.

The XR650 is a beast and will top 100mph with no problem.
I have never ridden a XR200, but the XR250s will still happily sit at 65mph all-day long.
The XR 400 I have at the moment is geared at 15 - 42 and will sit on the motorway at 75 with me and all my kit on the bike, with enough power left if I need to over take.

What's the price on the bike's you have seen for sale?

I will be riding my XR400 to Morocco next month ,so I hope the seat as bedded in by then

    Hi dazzer,

Not sure of the price, the 200 was a bit ropey and cheap but no sticker on the 650. When you say it's a beast do you mean the power or weight?

Obviously the 200 felt smaller than my tranny but the 650 felt a lot lighter too. Betraying my complete lack of bike knowledge... is the shorter service interval and more power due to xrs being 2-strokes?

Love the pics of your bike, did you conciously choose a 400, or was that what you already had, for your trip? Any pics or more details of the screen you've fitted???

Sorry about all the questions, I'm easily excited!!

I have tried the XR 650 off road and would say it as to much power for this country. It would be a great bike for a over land trip though.
The XR400 was my choice, after I went to Morocco last year on a BMW 1150,which was to heavy on some of the off road route's I tried.
So on my return I sold the BM and bought a new XR 400 and started to make it ready for a over land trip back to Morocco.
at the moment the bike look's like this.

The screen was bought from Geoff Westerby's in Bradford, they cost about £30,a after market cruiser screen .
I warmed up the top of the screen with a blow torch to get the flip which deflects the wind off the top of my helmet.

It would depend on your size and what you wanted to do on the bike,If it's just for trail riding then the XR250 is very good, but if you intend to do a good bit of road work the XR400 is more suited.
These XRs are all 4 stroke and have excellent build quility and built proof engines, and will last as long as you change the oil and filter every 1000 miles.

    Hi Magoo
You XR400 looks nice and light, unlike the over weight lard ass I'm riding
One of the best after market part's I have fitted is the Off Set Bar risers

    Bar Risers
These have made life a lot easer when off roading, with the bars being that bit higher and more forward.

I had a friend make me a stainless rack so I could mount the old ammo box on the back.
This is big enough to carry my , sleeping bag, air bed, stove, water filter, first aid kit , pan , cup, plate ,kettle. These are the things i want to keep safe so they are kept locked in the box .
I had tried push bike panniers which are water proof ,but they could not stand up to off roading when loaded with my kit.I also had to make a small bracket to fit inside the the left rear pannel to take the weight of the pannier.
So I have had to go back to my old throw overs, with a set of water proof liners from here...www.wiggle.co.uk
I'm carrying 2 rear and 2 front heavy duty tube's,plus a repair kit, just in case.

Then I fitted a old round ammo tube to the front of the sump guard,This is big enough to carry all the tool's I may need along with a few spares, and a tow rope, and tyre leaver's.
I have changed the fork oil to MX 10 to help cope with the extra weight.

The Tank is a 22 LT Acerbis ,bought from Ebay which returns me 440 Km to empty, when the bike is riden fully loaded at UK speed limit's.Its easy to fit ,but I would recomend fitting a inline filter after the Y piece .
I have also bolted a piece of checker plate to the bottom of the side stand to help keep the bike up right in the sand.

I ride a (slightly breathed on ) XR650R and I reckon the power's just fine for this country. It could do with being a bit lighter if you really want to throw it around off road, but the power's so predictable and tractable, I can't really see it being a problem.

Even off road with supermoto wheels it finds great drive in all but the really wet/slimy/boggy stuff.

Certainly you'd need to be a bit of a riding hero to be able to use all the power off road - but the extra definitely makes the tarmac bits between the dirty bits a lot more bearable!

It would depend on your size and what you wanted to do on the bike,If it's just for trail riding then the XR250 is very good, but if you intend to do a good bit of road work the XR400 is more suited.
I'd say the same, but would be picking between the 400 and the 650R - but then I'm a fat f**ker, and the 250'd struggle to lug my blubber around at a suitably interesting pace.

These XRs are all 4 stroke and have excellent build quility and built proof engines, and will last as long as you change the oil and filter every 1000 miles.
The 650R engine is a bit different to the traditional XR lumps - bit more highly strung, and water cooled. By the book the oil and filter changes are meant to be every 600 miles. I usually do an oil change every 300, but only do the filter every other change - but then the oil gets a harder time of it at supermoto speeds. I'd reckon 1000 miles changes ought to be OK for trail riding though.

    Re: Service intervals

When are you going to Morocco Dazzerrtw? I´m taking delivery of a XR400 this weekend and am also thinking of going to Morocco in the next couple of months, only I was thinking of taking the Transalp.

Still don't understand why the XRs need an oil change six? times as often as a TA??
