During my quest to find a baffle I went to my local bike shop (who also do MOT's) to enquire about getting a new baffle. The guy there said that he heard me pull up on the bike and he thought the noise level was ok (it must be down to individual descresion as they do not measure it). So I have decided to leave it for now and have a look at the VW conversion later.
Thanks for all the great responses!
Tony
I have just bought a XR400 (03) that doesn't have a baffle.
It's pretty "fruity" shall we say in the noise stakes.
I like the idea of the VW part. particularly price![]()
The bike seems to be set up correctly at the moment in terms of fuelling.
If I pop a baffle like this in, do I need to "convert" it back from "competition" set up ... Carb mount/fuel jet etc?
or is it a simple tweek on the idle or pilot screw?
or is it a suck it and see? ... oo er
For about £5 plus post Boycie, give it a go!![]()

I should have said ... I have ordered the VW part ... I was just wondering about the fueling ....![]()
Part is here .... fitted ... now for that MOT...
I have now fitted an aftermarket baffle supplied by XR Stuff. I am new to the XR/trail bikes generally but power seems ok and it is significantly quieter that with the baffle out. Fitting was a 30 second job (just knock into the end of the tail pipe) and it didn't need any modifications. Price was £39.95.
