    Re: Xr400 Exhaust baffle

I ordered the VW exhaust tip from VW Heritage, great link, but your fitting advice was terrible, it doesn't work, and my exhaust ended up in bits for three hours.

I did the conversion yesterdy and took photos, i'll do a photo definitive guide on here this week so people don't make mistakes.

An example of why your fitting advice doesn't work is you can't put the two baffle securing bolts back in with the vw tip because it has no holes in it, i've come up with a better way of securing it.

The bike is transformed, crisper throttle response, a lot faster acceleration, and not particularly noisier as long as you don't full bore on the throttle; if you do it'll roar, which I like.

I don't think it was meant to be definitive guide!
I managed fine from this and mine is held in by 2 screws just fine.
The only thing that isn't probably clear is that if you attempt this there's no going back.

    Re: Xr400 Exhaust baffle

Hi, thanks for replying, your link to the VW Heratage site was cool, what a great peice of kit for under a fiver!

Theres no putting the spark arrestor back on admitedly, but it's easy to swap the VW baffle back for the XR peashooter, so everything other than the (not needed in the UK) spark arrestor can be replaced exactly.

The VW baffle isn't an exact fit, but I got it airtight with my mod, I will do my article later and get the pics on and see what you think, hopefully between us we can get the definative step by step photo guide on.

The baffle is a lovely piece of kit though from VW, I was very impressed, for any XR 250/400 owner on a budget this baffle mod, and the airbox mod, derestricts both and makes a massive diference.

Can you see any jetting or mixture implications? After 24hrs I got a backfire and a dificult job starting, other than that it runs fine, crisper, faster and smoother; admitedly i've never checked or replaced my sparkplug but I did put a foam filter in the airbox with the snorkel removed.

Thank you for the whole idea in the first place though, without you it wouldn't have been possible.

Any advice on carb setting would be appreciated, I will check my plug.

    Wayne
