    Xr400 Exhaust baffle

    Hi,
I am looking for a baffle for my new (to me!) road registered xr400. I had a look at sliders exhaust and air box mod video and thought I would have a look at my own. On closer inspection it would appear that the previous owner must have removed the baffles and squashed the outlet pipe on the inside. It is a standard honda can and I want to bring it back to within the law.

Failing that I have had a look at after market cans and have found a DEP one on ebay for £200.

    What would others reccomend?

    Thanks
    Anthony

The original baffle is a ******* to get back in once removed. The Vortex exhaust tip is a surprisingly effective solution to cutting down on noise without strangling the engine but I'm not sure if it would meet UK regs.

My tip would be to insert a VW Beetle exhaust tip ,they cost about £5, they are a perfect fit and they do the job a treat

Thanks Dave, since looking into this, it would seem that i need a complete tip as the original one has been "modified" and perhaps a baffle on its own wont do.

Daz, I have had a quick look on the net for VW tip, but drew a blank (it was late last night (bed calling!)) Do you have any further info on that?

Although it sounds ok to me at the moment I do not think plod or the MOT tester would be too happy.

Could well do without points on my licence just yet as the ink is still wet. Do you get points for a defectice exhaust?

    Cheers Anthony

    Re: Xr400 Exhaust baffle

if you have the sock exhaust fitted to your bike, then this is stamped and is legal.
The standerd exhaust is to noisy with the pea shooter tip removed and if the pea shooter is left in the bike has a bad flat spot

I have been useing these VW Tail pipes since 1997 and not once has a bike faild it's MOT,or anyone as said that the bike was to loud.
here is a link...it's the part marked 7/8
it's the chrome bit that you see sticking out the back of the old Beetle's,they cost £2.95 from this web site.
If you remove the pea shooted which is held in place with 2 small screew's,then remove the 3 bolt's that hold the large chrome end bit in.
If there is a spark arrestor attached ,which looks like a long black mesh tube, then cut the mesh so as to remove it all...it's not needed.
Then I tap the VW pipe into the end on the XR's chrome tip,I leave about 2 inch sticking out, then replace the 2 small screew's to hold it in place, then you can refit the chrome tip to the exhaust with the 3 bolt's.
Have a go,it's a cheep was to sort the problem, and if your not happy with the result, then you only lost £5.

    Re: Xr400 Exhaust baffle

    I'm gonna try gazzertw's solution.

I bought a b&b xr insert from Demon MX to replace the original, but it's as loud as the original with the tip removed. You can pack it with padding to reduce it a bit more but not much. www.demonmx.co.uk

I'll let you know how I go with the VW part.

    Re: Xr400 Exhaust baffle

    Hi

I'm new to the site - just bought an XR400 this weekend, need to get it MOT'd and it has no baffles in.

Reading the above I'm reluctant to go outside of something designed for the bike just yet (I have no mechanical skill so playing it safe). I've been quoted £90 for the OE part or £35 for a pattern part (but with a 2 week + wait) by 'XR stuff' (they we really helpful).

    Anyone know anywhere else?

    Cheers
    Andy

I don't think bikes are subject to noise testing in the MOT, at least not where I got mine done!
