XR250 wont start

Hi,

New to the forum and hope someone can help.

I've got a 2001 XR250 (not sure which model suffix it is so some help with identification would be appreciated....I believe 96-04 is covered by RT,RV, RW, RX, RY, R1, R2, R3, R4) with a Wiseco 277cc big bore kit fitted.

It's been a pig to start since I got it nearly 2 years ago then eventually it died. It may be coincidental but it was shortly after I submerged it in a 'puddle' IIRC.

Had a go at sorting it myself but gave up and took it to my local workshop (Honda trained and a real good guy). First investigation showed no compression so after a barrel strip down, he decided new rings were needed. Fitted those, compression restored but still wouldn't start.

Sent the generator away for testing, found a fault, rewound it, refitted it....still won't start and he thinks the spark is a bit feeble (only found out today BTW).

Sat pondering tonight and I remember taking the two wires off the coil whilst I was messing with it originally....now to be honest I remember being unsure which wires went on which terminals when I came to refit them so took a lucky (or unlucky) guess.

So my questions:

1) Would reversed wires on coil cause a weak spark (the mechanic doesn't know about my confusion there yet...will tell him tomorrow).

2) Would reveresed wires on the coil cause any other electrical damage which would reduce spark quality.

3) The mechanic is trying to borrow an ignition control module to see if that's the problem....would that cause a weak spark, I thought if it was faulty it would give no spark?

4) What else could cause a weak spark....I assume the coil or the pulse generator could be culprits?

5) Is there a specific electrical problem that could have resulted from it being submerged, bearing in mind it did run for a significant time after that event (after I cleaned the carb out!)?
