    XR250R Clutch Problem

    Hello chaps,

I think the clutch has gone on my XR. For a while now it's been getting harder and harder to find neutral and last weekend when in neutral the bike jumped into gear without me touching anything.

On my way home I had problem changing gear - going for a gear and it not selecting, going for the shift and it staying in the same gear.

Also, it wouldn't free wheel in gear with the clutch pulled in.
Had a look at the clutch cable and there was a fair bit of play in it by the engine so adjusted that so it was tight and it made no difference.

The oil level should be OK as I checked it last weekend.

Anything else I should check before going for the clutch plates?

    Cheers.

Need some more information. when your riding does it change up and down the box without using the clutch ok it should if there's nowt wrong with the gearbox or selector mechanism. When the bike is at a stop can you feel the bike creeping forward with the engine running when its in gear with the clutch pulled in.

    Hi,

I haven't run the bike since this started happening because if I select a gear with the engine on I'm pretty sure it's going to stall as the clutch seems not to be having an effect - hence the no freewheeling in gear with the clutch in - surely it would stall if I put it in gear?

In your post you said you had trouble selecting gears on your way home i presumed you were riding it at the time you should be able to do that ok even if your clutch is knackered. Let us know what you find when you strip her down.

    Re: XR250R Clutch Problem

I lent my bike to a friend of a friend at a track who had never ridden off road before and he dropped it onto the left side at walking speed. It bent the gear lever in towards the engine casing so that the lever scored the casings with each shift.

Looks like it's bent something in the 'box.

Even if it is a bent piece in the gearbox, shouldn't I still be able to freewheel it in gear with the clutch in?
