Xr 250 good little bike ( my mates stuck in the mud on one in another post) enough power to use a bit lighter than a 400 reliable find one and give it a go. May be easier in a 2stroke though. I did one at connor downs a while ago and said never again 400cc to much to handle especially with all the switchbacks on the wet etc.

    Re: enduro

the only reason i can think of for getting the 400 over the 250 is if you have lot of distance on the road before hitting the lanes

something like 30-50 mile trip to get to a lane might be better compromise and go for a 400.

But the 250 will easily sit at 60-70mph on the road and WHY would you want to go faster I mean with full knobblies on none of them are happy over 65 ish anyway.

My mate has just sold hi 400 and when we went out I never ever noticed any difference, we went the same routes, places etc unless your a riding GOD the 400 will be slightly more a handful offroad,

But hey why do the manufacturers keep increasing the engine size of the adventure bikes year after year - answer coz in the main we reckon that more is better ( its in our Genes )

try em both out one day and see what you think ! but i would not swap my 250 for an Xr400 personally

    Hiya

Farmboy seems to have jumped in to answer for me?! ... My comments were based on Power, torque etc. I personally prefer to go for more grunt as given the similar weight/cost etc etc you get more bang for your buck mate!

    Re: enduro

I have the 400 I think it's a good compromise for me. Were I fit enough I would happily do Enduro's on it. The 250 of course would be a bit lighter but I think I'd choose the extra power over the weight..... mind you I am hankering after an XR650 now.... so perhaps I'm am biased towards power.

    Hiya mate,

I couldn't really help here bud, I had a DR800 (DrBig) abouit 10 years ago so I find it hard to compare with my XR400 (and my memory is very poor!) The 800 did weigh a ton though.... I can confirm that!!

Good luck with what ever you finally choose
