    XR 400

    Hi All,

I am new to this forum and a bit out of touch with enduro/trail bikes. I came upon this forum by accident, but joined as sson as I saw it. Ifancy doing some greenlaning and want something road legal. I fancy the xr400, having had a go on one down our lane (more rocky than green!) and loved it. What can I expect to pay for one and are there any pitfalls to watch out for. How do they compare to the DRZ400 or other enduros?

    Regards,

    Steve

    Re: XR 400

    Hi Steve,
    Check out:-

    Do I buy and XR??

Not much to check really. I picked up a 02 xr400 last year for £1700. I figured as long as it looked ok it should be ok.
The swing arm bolts are know for the difficulty of removing as they stick inside the casing and swing arm, some times the only way to get them out is by a large amount of cutting.
Mine is stuck, but i soak it in plus gas at every opportunity so when it bearings need changing it should come out !! Hoping!!

As has been said you'll pick something up between 1200 - 1800 I would say. More if you want something better like DazzerRTW's XR.

Pitfalls..... well the engine is pretty much bullet proof, if it seems, that's if it's had the oil changed regularly. So see if you can confirm that. Enduro bikes that are used occasionally can just be left in the garage and not given any maintenance which you need to try to spot. There are plenty about so be choosy.

    Re: XR 400

I picked up a 51 plated XR for a grand, but it does need a tiny bit of work to make it 100%.
Look away from eBay and Autotrader and you never know what you may find, for example, my bike was listed on Gumtree, but also try freeads, friday ad, adtrader and so on...

    Re: XR 400

    Thanks guys,

It seems the XR is quite a good bet then, but the DRZ has the electric boot. I have to justify £1000+ on toys to er indoors first, but I will keep looking. A mate has an XR250(with a 280 kit on it) for sale. Is it worth looking at or will it be overstressed and likely to be burning bits out quickly? He says it is plenty powerful enough, but I have not ridden it.

    What do people think?

    Re: XR 400

i was thinking about getting a drz but decent ones are like hens teeth and can be expensive! hopefully im picking an xr400 up on friday! dont be scared of the lack of leccy start as a good xr usually fires up ok with one or two kicks and its not as hard as some people make out.

In my opinion i would stay away from the 280xr and go for the 400!

    Re: XR 400

I have done 1000s of miles on my xr280, it's one under max bore size, and completely standard else where, all it dose really is give it more torque, so you don't rev it so hard. so that could mean it's less stressed that a standard 250 maybe?? but still it works very well.

Pete, that has confused me. Are they (280s) bulletproof or not??

Being difficult to start after you drop it makes you put more effort into trying stay on
