    Rear wheel removal XR125L

My son has managed to gain a puncture in the rear tyre of his XR125, last night I thought I'd remove the back wheel so that I could drop it off at a local bike shop they could then sort out both the puncture and the broken spoke, So I set about what I thought was gonna be a straight forward job
Frst of all I slackened the chain tensioners and disconnected the rear brake, then removed the large nut on the on the right hand side of the spindle, at this point I'm led to believe that its just a case of drifting the spindle out but its simply not budging, am I missing something? I have given everything a good spray on penetrating oil but still no movement whatso ever, I'm not going at it full swing for fear of damaging either thread/nut/both but I'm not being gentle either.
Has anyone got any clues/ideas any help much appreciated

Support the weight of the wheel with a brick either side of the tyre so it sits straight as the spindle comes out. Then put a piece of wood on the end of the spindle to protect the threads and wack the wood with as big a hammer as you can find. If you can get someoene to stop the bike moving away from you (or put it against a wall) all the better.

When putting the spindle back, be sure to grease it lightly so it comes out easily next time.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I think you may have hit the nail on the head (or the spindle on the thread) I was struggling a bit trying to support the bike and whack it at the same time, I have been protecting the thread with a block of wood though........cheers russ

sometimes its best to spin the nut back onto the spindle to protect the threads the whack it good! i find that sometimes the wood absorbs a lot of the shock.

I was getting nowhere with the block of wood, so went with direct hit on the nut head and its shifted abot 10mm but now the nut is totally stripped and u/s loads of corrosion falling out its no wonder the damn thing is ceased (and on a 4500 mile bike) gonna try and get hold of a couple of the nuts tommorow and a decent drift...what a pain in the backside this is turning out to be

    Re: Rear wheel removal XR125L

Well here we are 3 days in to a 20 minute job, Had to give up with the block of wood, so clobbered directly on the nut twice, its moved 10mm but totally ruined the nut (not a thread in sight, gotta be monkey metal), visited local bike shop who handed me a nut and said "this'll do" got home only to find it was to big so thats tuesday night scuppered, I think I've got the right nut now (from a local merchants) I've got myself a nice block of aluminium for drifting and a nice long thin drift (for when it actually starts to move), even though it moved 10 mm on monday it's still ceased solid.
If all fails tonite, its going into back of mates van and up to bike shop (can hardly believe all this for a damn puncture)....Oh I'm now on my 3rd can of WD40

This may sound daft, but knock it back in a little, you need to keep it moving, should move more when you try to knock it out again.
If you damage the thread you can usaully clean it up with a file, as long as there is some thread sticking through the nut, it should be ok.
I would get new bearings and seals on order.
Obviously clean up the shaft with emery cloth before refitting.
I always use copper slip on the wheel spindle.
A brass drift and a BIG hammer are your best friends
