Thread: Better mpg than my Transalp?

    Better mpg than my Transalp?

Just got back from Morocco and I quite fancy something a bit more capable/lighter offroad than the Transalp; the reality is that it will get used a lot on the road. Anyone know how an XR400 would compare for mpg when used for my daily commute? I'm getting 54mpg from the TA, dropped a bit when loaded but only by a fraction.

An XR4 or XR6 would have been a lot better in the sand or on the piste (although the TA performed fantastically) but given that it has to be a bit of an all rounder I'm worried that I'd be sacrificing economy by going the XR route, any thoughts?

Not sure about the MPG, but you might want to PM Rustydude about his FMX if you're after a single. Thread here -

Honda FMX Supermoto for sale, REDUCED in price again

Hope you both get something sorted.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

I'm pretty sure the XR650R is less economical than the TA 650. It could be that it encourages more spirited riding, but I was never gentle with the TA either. (It ended up using about a tank in 110 miles!)

Bugger, you're right it should be 45 not 54. I thought I was doing quite well next to my mate and his 60mpg 650GS, even more reason to start looking smaller!

Jeez guys !! you must be thrashing those Alps ???

My Alp easily returned 55 MPG , (between 52 and 58 MPG).

I get 45MPG from my KTM 990 , nearly 50 mpg on long runs.

Call me anul if you wish but I've got fuel consumption records going back ....way back. I like to keep a close eye on consumption it's a sure way of telling something is going tits-up before it actually breaks !!

    I have a house , but I can't guarantee it's safe !!

Perhaps I'm getting my maths wrong:

    150miles to reserve
18 litre tank (3 litre reserve)?
    equals 10 miles per litre
    plugged into onlineconversion.com....

    45mpg?

Re: Better mpg than my Transalp?

According to my Honda handbook, the 650 TA has a 19.6 Litre tank which includes a 3.8 Litre reserve.

Why Honda quote a reserve figure when there is no manual fuel tap with a "reserve" position is beyond me. Unless, they mean that once you hit the red mark on the guage then you are into reserve, as by doing this I can get about 15 Litres into the tank.
