    Pillion footpegs?

Has anyone fitted pillion foot pegs? Is the subframe upto the strength and did you bolt or weld them on?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

My friend fitted some pegs to his 400, bolted them on and they hold up just fine, took me on the back with no problems and I'm pretty much average in size.

    Re: Pillion footpegs?

Hi Daniel, although the XR400 is a rider only bike, I have taken a pillion on the back of mine. I made up some pillion footrests and mounts, but I only fit them when I want to take someone on the back. Not very often.

Yes, the sub frame is strong enough, but not for a heavy weight. The Honda Owners Manual quotes the combined weight of rider and cargo as 100kg (220lbs).

I welded a small tag to the rear of each sub frame down tube, you hardly see them. 4 inches up from the bottom fixing bolt (if you have a Honda Owner’s Manual look at page 22 (12)). Then I bent some small diameter heavy gauge tube and flattened the ends. Just like the ones fitted to the XR250L. If you have a Haynes Manual look at them on page 7-3 (pic3.4) I drilled holes in the flats to line up with the tags. The flattened tube at the bottom then slides in behind the plate by the brake pedal. Longer bolts are needed to replace the Honda fixings. The footrests I used were just some after market ones. If you go to the M&P site www.mandp.com they will send you a free catalogue, see page 57/58 for footrests.

Thankyou for the detailed information, very much appreciated! I don't suppose you could attach a photo of them as well? I would think it would then make for a good 'sticky' if anyone else wanted to do the same?

    Re: Pillion footpegs?

Not the cheapest butmade for thejob:

I bought a set of ally pegs from Baja Designs in California and had them welded on. The welder actually made me new welding plates as the originals were pants. Not tried the pegs yet, but they seem OK. I think I would only use them for shortish trips and it gives me the choice to carry a pillion if I want...

Have a look on their website.
