    Registration of XR 400

Some time ago I joined the site looking for information about how to road register my xr400r. I received information (many thanks to all who contributed to my posts) but didnt get the whole picture so I thought I would post all of the steps required to make this happen whilst its so fresh in my mind, my documents arrived through the letterbox today

    My bike was a 2001 XR 400 R
I contacted Honda UK and applied for a Dating certificate this cost £30 and the information they supplied was found using the engine and frame number and any other bits of information i could send them. I put all of the information into a letter with a cheque and sent it to them and the year of manufacture certificate took about 2 weeks to arrive. (Step 1 complete)

I then contacted my Insurance company and explained the situation to them. The agreed to issue a certificate of insurance based upon the frame number. (its important to use the frame number and not engine number as the MOT station will only use the frame number and this makes all of the documents tie together.) The insurance document is only valid for a period of 30 days and needs to be valid with about a week spare when the application is made.

The bike was then transported for a MOT based upon the frame number. You will need to have brake lights operated front and rear brake for a daytime MOT and a horn. I opted for the full MOT and fitted lights and indicators.

Next obtain a V55/5 form from a post office or contact the DVLA at Swansea and they will send you one free of charge.
Fill out as much information as you can.
I opted to register mine as an Enduro because it met the criteria of being able to pass a 310mm rule under the sump and having a seat height of over 900mm, this does away with the need to have the motorcycle MSVA test to meet type approval. In box 10 of the V55/5 (this is the section which deals with type approval ) write the the words "Enduro EXEMPT" This clause is to allow the registration of "Competition motorcycles for offroad and onroad use" and is by far the bst way to go if you machine can acheive the height criteria.

Take the forms and all of the above paperwork to a DVLA office along with the documentation fee of £55 plus you also need to take along enough money to cover the cost of the road tax for 1 year, mine in this case was £33.
If all of the documentation is in order they will process the application.
They may ask to see the motorcycle to ensure it is what you have claimed, I took mine to the DVLA office but the inspector couldnt be arsed so they just processed it there and then. They take all of your documents and thats it you will leave with nothing. Within 7 days you documents will arrive with a v970 form which allous you to purchase a plate for your bike with the number they have issued, you will also receive a TAX disc and a replacement issued MOT with the bikes full Registration on it.

Once you have the Registration number contact the Insurance company you used and tell them the registration number so they can validate the information to the Motor Insurance Bureau database, if you dont do this and forget in all of your new found excitment your insurance will be cancelled after 30 days and they will not write again to tell you "BEWARE"

Take the V970 to a plate shop and get a plate (Note you will need to take your picture card Licence with you)

Bolt to the bike along with the tax disc,

Hey presto you are now allowed to go and play with all of those horrible stressd 4 wheel people who are total blind and oblivious to motorcycles from within their steel boxes.

I hope this helps someone, sorry it so long winded,

    Rick

    Re: Registration of XR 400

I think some of the larger DVLA offices are able to process there and then, but the way the aplication is made is the same. I wanted to give the whole route to getting the registration done, as this information would have made the process so much easier for me.

    Re: Registration of XR 400

    Hi
I'm currently trying to register my XR400 and need a bit of advice.

I brought the bike off ebay (did a police check on VIN etc) but it didn't have any paperwork with it.

I'm at the point where I've been into the DVLA with all the paperwork and have an inspection booked in.
But they sent me a vat414 form to fill in.
(Motor vehicles brought into the United Kingdom from within the European Community). WTF? How do they know if the bike has been brought into the UK from the EU?

    It's asking questions like
    • 'Country of first registration'
    • 'Duty and VAT paid in EC'
    • 'Traders name and VAT number'
I've got no idea of any of the bikes history except that the MOT tester thought that from the condition of the bike/moter etc he thought the k's on the odometer where genuine. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any ideas?

    Any help appreciated

I got my bike on the road, it's plated, taxed and on the road!

If you bike has ground clearance of 310mm min and a seat height of 900mm then it can be registered as 'Enduro Exempt' and doesn't need to have a MSVA.

The people at the DVLA aren't very well schooled on the rules. I went into the DVLA at Borehamwood, Herts on the Tuesday with what I thought was all the paperwork (see thread at top) and the person I spoke to said I still needed a certificate of compliance from Honda.... I went back in the next day, got a different person, I had exactly the same paperwork as the day before and got everything processed.

You need MOT, Insurance (both on Frame VIN), Dating Certificate and the V55/5 from DVLA.

    Re: Registration of XR 400

I am looking to follow your advice and get my XR250 on the road, I have just checked the manual and the stated ground clearence of my model is 305mm, can i raise it or will it need the full SVA test?

If it does need the SVA what does that entail?

    Thanks
