    XR 400 engine

    HI all,

Just returned from a amazing trip around Iceland on my XR 400. Mostly off road and a total of 1300 miles.

However the bike used 4l of oil to get round and was putting out smoke at times. The smoke would go from white to blue to brown. Sometimes when trying to find TDC to start it there would hardly be any compression and other times it would be amazing. The bike would always start and run fine tho.

It is a 1998 model, but should i strip the engine down or is it possible to buy a new engine for it as the rolling bike seems fine?

    Cheers for your help guys

    John

I would strip the engine, and rebuild.

My bikes had the 440 lit on it and it is a 99 model. It too smoked i didn't worry about i waited for something too happen, then it died on me when i was out riding got it home and found the conrod had split due to metal fatique. I've now rebuilt as a 400cc standard bike. Yours probalby just needs rings and the valves done
